Courtesy Title

A courtesy title has no power beyond what it is granted by the holder of the substantive title of the associated land. A courtesy title is often granted to the heir or heir apparant to, or the spouse of, a substantive title holder. How courtesy titles are handled varies significantly across the Empire, but it is almost universal for heirs to substantive titles to have distinctive courtesy titles making their future entitlements clear. It is also very common for heirs and elder children of an individual with multiple substantive titles to be granted one of their parent's lesser titles as a courtesy title; although, they do not, in actuality, enjoy any of the powers of the title, with the true holder retaining control.
