Howl
It was a gruesome sight, burning buildings and dead bodies all over the village.
"Zairah." a girl's voice croaked. Zairah looked around frantically until she spotted her younger sister, who sat there, leaning against a wall and trying to stop the heavy bleeding from a wound in her gut.
"Arthea!" Zairah called out. She knelt at her sister's side and embraced her, "You're alive. You're going to be fine."
"Don't fool yourself, I'm dying. But you have to promise me you'll find those riders and make them pay for this." Arthea said weakly. Zairah nodded. Arthea smiled and put something into Zairah's hand.
"Here, for your birthday." she breathed. Zairah managed a tiny smile through the oncoming tears. Arthea's eyes lost focus and stared into nowhere. Zairah closed her lids and cradled her body, sobbing. After a while, she let go of Arthea's body and got up. A howl of pain, grief and anger escaped her.
Only now did she see what Arthea had given her. It was the necklace with the little carved dragon pendant from dark wood she had inherited when their mother had died from the fever a few years ago. Zairah put on the necklace. Slowly, her grief and terror gave way to anger and determination. She would keep her promise. She would find them and make them pay, no matter how long it would take.
