Grave of Kings

Sometimes known as the “Marsh of Nemetia” (perhaps after the Shetin goddess of the dead, Nemet), this place is usually described as a vast wetlands, extending as far as the eye can see in every direction. The realm is said to take its usual name from a legend, found in cultures as distant as the Madduri and the Ald, that the souls of great monarchs tend to be drawn to this place - though they are by no means the only inhabitants of the marshes.   A place of peaceful slumber amid the reeds, the Grave of Kings is a place in which the labours of life are rewarded with eternal rest; the shades who come to this place are soon overcome with a great weariness, and before long fall into a deep and dreamless sleep, slowly sinking into the waters until they are lost beneath the surface. How long a shade might remain in slumber in the marsh is unclear; the Corl believe that those who sleep here will never awaken of their own accord, and will slumber until the end of time without ever being reborn into the mortal world, but this is by no means universally agreed upon.   The Grave of Kings is associated with an obscure Madduri goddess known as the Mother of the Marsh, who some claim was once a wise and powerful witch capable of returning the dead to life - if they can find her hut within the marsh before they fall asleep. It is also associated with an enigmatic entity known only as The Sleeper, who some claim was the first being to ever have died, who slumbers peacefully at the very centre of the swamp.
