A Pack of Ghouls. Death of Lephit Ezim.
1 Marpenoth, The Year of Twelve Warnings (1494 DR)
City of Elturel, Avernus (1st layer of Hell)
For nearly a tenday Gorn Huntley and Lephit Ezim had helped survivors stay alive in Helm's Shieldhall. The survivors in Helm's Shieldhall, led by Ontharr Frume, a trusted member of the Order of the Gauntlet, are unable to make it to the High Hall. Instead, they have sought refuge in the temple dedicated to Helm. *** Gorn and Lephit were sent by Ontharr Frume in search of more survivors said to be still trapped in many parts of the city. One recent report from a survivor mentioned seeing a glowing sphere floating inside a ruined house not far from the temple. Hoping it could be a portal or some means of returning to Faerun or even getting a message to whoever can help them, Ontharr Frume sent Gorn and Lephit to investigate. When the two reached the home reported to have a possible portal, they found the home partially in ruin. From the outside, the house appeared to have belonged to a wizard or sorcerer at one point by the various furnishings they saw. In the middle of one exposed room, they saw a glowing floating rift in the air. "That must be the portal," Lephit said. "I'll need to examine it closely to make sure." But as the two made their way closer, they spotted a pack of ghouls quickly moving their way! Gorn and Lephit ran towards the house but soon found themselves surrounded by ghouls bent on feasting upon them. One ghoul was heard telling the others in its pack, "Yess! More food for the Savior! You can eats one, but we bring the other to the cemetery for baptissm! Yess!” Several ghouls quickly surrounded Gorn and Lephit. Lephit cast a fireball killing a ghoul on a rooftop near the portal. The other nearby ghoul was badly burnt bad survived the conflagration. Gorn swung his holy avenger with deadly precision, but there were too many surrounding them both. In seconds, Lephit was surrounded on all sides. "You must get to that portal, Gorn! It's our only chance of getting help and saving the survivors in Helm's Shieldhall." The paladin of Torm was torn between saving his friend, risking death himself, or saving the hundred and more survivors in Helm's temple. "Go!" Lephit screamed as a ghoul raked her. The ghoul's attack paralyzed her. Unable to control her legs, the wizard toppled sideways to the ground. She was quickly surrounded by more ghouls. Gorn, with no choice lest he dies along with Lephit, ran towards the floating rift in the house. A half-burnt ghoul leaped down from the rooftop overhead. It missed the paladin and impaled itself on a jagged piece of wood. Gorn looked back at the ghouls surrounding Lephit, their claws and mouths covered in the wizard's blood. "I will return and avenger her!" He turned and touched the portal. The devastated city of Elturel winked out of view in a blur as he was suddenly sucked into the portal. Gorn felt himself falling in darkness. He prayed to Torm and hoped he would be able to find help and return to Elturel to save the others in time.
