And Then There Were Three
23 Eleint, The Year of Twelve Warnings (1494 DR)
Dungeon of the Dead Three, Baldur's Gate, the Sword Coast
With Saer Justinian and Nicaster having decided to safely escort Klim Jhasso, a nobleman they rescued at the hands of Bane worshippers, back to his estate in the Upper City, the three remaining adventurers continued to push deeper into the Dungeon of the Dead Three to put a stop to the murderous rampage of the Dead Three's cultists.
Only three of the five adventurers remained to explore the rest of the Dungeon of the Dead Three. Aeolond, a cleric of the elven god Corellon Larethian, Glindo, the group's rogue, and Laythin, a fighter from the Shaar, agreed to complete the task of putting a stop to the cultists after the adventurers were provided with information by Tarina in the Elfsong Tavern. ** As they continued, the three adventurers encountered and slew a frighteningly thin woman in a black robe studying a corpse in a partially collapsed room, her face largely hidden under a cowl. Around her feet crept a swarm of skeletal rats. After resting for an hour, the three were set upon by two worshippers of Bane wearing chain mail. Each had a steel shield and was armed with mace and longbow. The three prevailed and killed the worshippers of Bane. Later, the group discovered a flooded crypt. Murky, foul-smelling water surrounded an open stone sarcophagus resting in the middle of this crypt, its stone lid lay broken in three pieces under the water to one side of the sarcophagus. After investigating the rotting bones in the sarcophagus which exposure to the crypt's dampness had reduced them to black sludge, a ghostly battleax appeared above the sarcophagus and attacked the party. Glindo had been badly hurt in the encounter, during which the party discovered their attacks couldn't harm the spectral weapon. Rather than risk being slain by the ghost battleax, the group retreated out of the flooded crypt. The adventurers were relieved when the spectral weapon did not chase after them. ** The group continued on and later came upon a dry, partially collapsed room that contained a stone altar with humanoid skulls and bones piled around it. The top of the altar was covered with dozens of half-melted candles made of black wax, all unlit. They didn't stop to investigate the room and so continued on. Soon, they found themselves in a long hallway with old wooden doors lining both sides of the hallway. Behind one door, they found an empty room. Much of the room had fallen in, with the debris field mostly burying a stone sarcophagus that was seemingly looted years ago. After listening at another door, they heard faint humanoid moans coming from the room beyond. They decided to leave the door alone for a moment. They investigated the door at the end of the hallway. They noticed flickering light under the door. Glindo peaked under the door since there was enough space to see by. Beyond the door, he spotted a room with walls covered with streaks and splashes of dried blood. He also spotted the feet of two dangling bodies shackled to the walls. One, Glindo thought, might have been human; the other, he figured was a tiefling after seeing a tail. Neither were moving. In the middle of the room, Glindo noticed a sturdy wooden chair with a bloody whip draped over it. A bucket sat on the floor nearby. After Glindo reported to Laythin and Aeolond what he saw the three adventurers discussed what their next course of action should be.
