High Hall, Part 1

General Summary

Day 4   The City of Elturel, Avernus, First Layer of the Nine Hells         Wink's Warriors left Helm's Shieldhall to make their way to High Hall Cathedral where it was rumored that Grand Duke Ravengard may be holding up with other of Elturel's religious and political leaders.   Jade, a female tabaxi monk from the far eastern lands of Kara-Tur in Faerûn, joined the group. She said she had been surviving in the streets of Elturel for days after it was pulled into Avernus. She found her way to Helm's Shieldhall after hearing about the sanctuary from other survivors she encountered. The group was still reeling from the loss of Toph, but welcomed Jade into Wink's Warriors.   The day before, members of Wink's Warriors had been sent by the priest, Onthar Frume to the Dragoneye Dock House, the estate of Marisima Rathanda, a Hellrider, and her husband Lorimir, an elven harbormaster who ran the Dragoneye Docks on the River Chionthar.   The adventurers were tasked with bringing back weapons that could be used to fight the infernals. At the Dragoneye Dock House, the group had destroyed five vampire spawns and a deathlock mastermind named Spurnyte Mal. The deathlock claimed Zariel had brought him back as a deathlock and was then given the opportunity to exact his revenge against the Hellrider who had killed him in life. With a ritual, Spurnyte Mal had turned Marisima's entire family, including their twin daughters, into vampire spawns to serve him as thralls for eternity.   After handing the weapons over to Ontharr, Wink's Warriors agreed to make their way to the High Hall Cathedral. Midgard, the dwarven cleric, offered to remain behind until the others secured the streets to High Hall. Onthar had urged the cleric to help with many of the survivors who arrived with many injuries, some grave enough to require amputations. With only Onthar and Midgard capable of administering magical healing, some succumbed to their wounds and died.     **     On the way, they fought several infernals guarding one of two bridges they needed to cross to get to the other side of Elturel which floated over 500 feet above Avernus, the first layer of the Nine Hells.   After clearing the bridge, they ran into a Vrock, a demon who was strangely trying to examine the meaning of its existence. After talking to it, the Vrock offered to accompany Wink's Warrior even if for a short period.   When they arrived at High Hall, they fought several Hell Hounds guarding the cathedral's front entrance.   Once inside, the group fought two assassins who stepped out of a magical portal. The two assassins had apparently been sent by the Oni Warlord, Azamuku Kurai, who wanted Jade killed.   During the battle, Jade recognized the powers of the assassins resembling those of Onis. After each assassin was killed, it reverted back to its original Oni form.   Farther inside the cathedral, they encountered an armored plated infernal commanding several spined devils who were busy searching for a secret door in or around the great altar of Torm.   Once they had killed all of the infernals, the group used healing spells then searched the altar.   It wasn't long before they discovered the secret entrance to the catacombs below High Hall.
