Nangnang's Tomb
General Summary
12 Marpenoth, The Year of the Duplicitous Courtier (1496 DR)
Tomb of the Nine Gods, City of Omu, Chult
Just over an hour before, S.M.A.L.L. had decided to take a short break after their battle with skeletons and a Chultan warrior who, from inside a bronze shield, threw spears at the group. Some in the group were hurt. Sein did what he could to help heal the others. But it was also agreed that a short period of rest would help. Afterward, the group found a secret door they knew was somewhere in the room since the skeleton with a square crown disappeared from view soon after they spotted it from outside the room. The secret door opened into a narrow corridor. Ancient cobwebs filled the narrow corridor, whose midpoint features an arched alcove. Within the alcove, a dusty bottle stood on a table. A cork topped off the bottle. Upon closer inspection, they saw an obsidian-skinned female inside the bottle. She wore beautiful sapphire cords braided into her dark hair. Two platinum armbands engraved with dueling dragons adorned her arms while she held a large maul in one hand. Sajen, with his enchanted helm, heard the woman asking to be freed. She promised to aid them three times while in the tomb. She also promised to take them anywhere in the multiverse if they wanted to. The group freed the trapped woman inside the bottle. A cloud of smoke hissed out of the bottle and formed into the same woman they had seen inside the bottle. However, her lower half was composed of dark mist. When asked who she was, she didn't seem to understand any of the others. They tried speaking to her in all the languages they knew, but she couldn't understand them. However, Sajen was still able to understand what she was saying. She said her name was Keshma. She said she was a Dao who Acererak trapped inside the bottle after encountering her in the Elemental Plane of Earth. He then brought the bottle to this tomb. She doesn't know how long she's been in the tomb but wants to be freed and return home. Continuing on, the adventurers discover another chamber. The air reeked of sulfur and brimstone. On the chamber floor, a pentagram traced in salt surrounded an ornate sarcophagus, its lid covered with figurines of prancing frog-like humanoids. Sajen told everyone that salt used in pentagrams usually meant it was used to keep something confined within the pentragram. Everyone thought it might be whatever was inside the sarcophagus. Keshma said she had heard of Acererak trapping Trickster Gods within the dungeon. She encouraged the party to free them and use them to defeat Acererak and escape the dungeon. A sudden movement caught the group's attention. On the opposite side of the room, the group spotted a skeleton wearing a square crown. It was quickly trying to climb up one of the chamber's five pillars. Sein quickly drew his blade and rushed to attack the skeleton before it climbed out of reach. He was careful not to step on the salt. The paladin struck the skeleton. It fell into pieces. It's skull rolled into the middle of the pentragram. Suddenly, a creature began to materialize within the pentagram. It was frog-like, with a menacing appearance. Its leathery skin, a sickly, mottled gray, was covered in warts and scars from countless battles. Sharp, jagged claws extended from its powerful limbs, and its wide, tooth-filled maw seemed twisted into a cruel grin. Its eyes, cold and calculating, gleamed with a malevolent intelligence, while its hunched, muscular frame exudes an aura of raw, chaotic power. Sajen heard Keshma call the creature a Gray Slaad. She said it hails from the plane of Limbo and was probably brought here by Acererak also. The group attacked the Gray Slaad. The battle was fierce as the gray salad hurled a roaring fireball at the adventurers, engulfing some of them, as well as the slaad in searing flames. Undeterred, S.M.A.L.L. retaliated. The spellcasters countered with a barrage of spells while Sein and Neverwinter attacked with their deadly weapons. Mask, having avoided the fireball since he was still inside the corridor they emerged from, stayed out of the battle for several seconds while the others continued their assault on the slaad. Finally, Mask took out his short bow. He aimed at the gray slaad's head and let loose an arrow. It struck the severely wounded slaad through the head, killing it instantly. While Mask removed the armbands from the dead slaad, the others opened the sarcophagus. Twelve painted wooded statuettes depicting frog-like creatures, unlike the slaad, adorned the top of the sarcophagus. Neverwinter said the statuettes were 'grungs', froglike humanoids who inhabited many parts of Chult. Inside the sarcophagus, they discovered a varnished clay urn. Zantix reached for the urn. Upon touching the urn, he momentarily had an irresistible urge to dance. But his will prevailed and the urge to dance soon faded away. He quickly dropped the urn back into the sarcophagus, where it broke into pieces, revealing two clay vials and a petrified egg. Fortunately, the clay vials didn't break. Sajen cast a Detect Magic spell and found both the vials and the egg were magical. Mask later used Identity to find out what one of the vials was as well as the egg. Mask said he would need to take a long rest before he cast Identify again. One vial turned out to be Potion of Poison. The egg turned out to be a magical item that would enable a spellcaster to speak the command word, recall, to bring back to mind an expended spell. The treasure was divided as the group decided to make their way to the staircase with the skull they had just found.
