Reclaiming Camp Vengeance, Part 1
General Summary
22 - 24 Elesias, The Year of the Duplicitous Courtier (1496 DR)
Camp Vengeance, Chult
Shortly after encountering two triceratops and a stegosaurus, a patrolling group of seven individuals emerged from the jungle. The patrol moved towards the adventurers cautiously, their eyes scanning the area for signs of danger. A sense of tension hung in the air. The patrol included a pale-skinned half-elf male with dark reddish hair and a beard, wearing a bright red coat and equipped with a shortsword and longbow. He led six Chultan humans: three females and three males. All wore similar bright red coats and carried spears in hand. "Well met," the half-elf said. "I am Wulf Rygor, and this is Lorsa Bilwatal." He pointed to a tall female Chultan who walked up beside him. "Greetings," Sein said in response. "Where are you folks from?" Sajen asked. "We are from Camp Vengeance," Lorsa said. "Or what's left of it." The members of S.M.A.L.L. looked to one another in confusion. "What do you mean what's left of it?" Neverwinter asked. "We are headed there to buy supplies. We need rain catchers and other provisions." "Unfortunately, what supplies we have in the camp are now under the control of Batiri goblins," Wulf said. "What are Batiri goblins?" Mask asked. "The Batiri are a collection of bloodthirsty clans and tribes of goblins throughout Chult," Neverwinter said. Both Wulf and Lorsa nodded in agreement. "There are many all over the jungle, like sand fleas at a beach." "How did they manage to capture your camp?" Brick asked as he sat down on top of the recently slain stegosaurus. Wulf and Lorsa looked to the earth genasi and the others with wonder and awe at having killed three of Chult's most deadly dinosaurs. "They attacked at night," Wulf said. "We were outnumbered. While many of them scaled the walls with vine ropes and grappling hooks, many still landed in the middle of the camp, emerging out of large round 'baskets' made from vines and branches hurled from makeshift catapults using nearby trees." "Although several goblins died from the impact, too many survived and overwhelmed us from within," Lorsa said added. "Before we could stop them, a small group of them made it to the camp's gate, allowing many more to enter and join in the attack." Sein turned to Wulf. "Are you the leader of Camp Vengeance?" "I am now," Wulf said. "However, before the attack, our leader was Niles Breakbone. He was killed in the attack, along with eleven others." "It sounded like you didn't have that many people in the camp to begin with," Sajen said. "We did weeks ago," Lorsa said. "But Commander Breakbone ordered nearly two dozen of our veteran fighters to travel to Jahaka Anchorage. The Commander had received orders to assault the suspected pirate stronghold. But we never heard from the assault group since. They should have returned a week ago." Sein took out the necklace he found and handed it to Lorsa. "I believe this belongs to your group." "Where did you find this?" Lorsa asked, shocked to receive the bloodied necklace. "Every member of the Order of the Gauntlet proudly wears this." Sein explained how he and the others had come upon the abandoned camp not far from Jahaka Anchorage, and it appeared the soldiers in the camp may have been attacked or ambushed by a large predator, perhaps a dinosaur. They found no sign of any survivors. Both Lorsa and Wulf were devastated to hear about the missing soldiers. However, both agreed the priority was now to retake Camp Vengeance from the goblins. Everyone in S.M.A.L.L. agreed and was willing to help in exchange for the supplies they needed to complete their quest to find the lost city of Omu. The next day, under dark clouds and rain, the adventures snuck their way into Camp Vengeance. After being told the latrines built near the edge of the camp had small holes dug out of the dirt so waste from the camp could be discharged into the surrounding moat, which acted as a cesspit, the group decided to use the same holes to gain entrance into the camp. Everyone agreed it was a disgusting plan, but they also knew there were very few options available.
