Thurl Merosska
General Summary
25 Mirtul, The Year of The Scarlet Witch (1491 DR)
Feathergale Spire, Sumber Hills, Dessarin Valley
The lord commander of the Feathergale Knights was a well-built male human in his early fifties. Embossed feather patterns ornamented the plates of his armor, and his kingly cloak boasted a feathered mantle.
When the entertainers entered, the lord commander smoothed his white-blond hair into place, then bowed low before them as if he were only a lowly courtier.
"Welcome to Feathergale Spire, the retreat of the Feathergale Society. I am Thurl Merosska, the lord commander."
After the introductions were completed, the entertainers, who had introduced themselves as The Traveling Willbury, were shown to a room where they could rest and prepare themselves for the evening feast's entertainment.
Savra, whom they had met earlier, spoke to the group in private.
She said she wasn't entirely convinced the group was entertainers. But perhaps they could still help her. She said she found a letter in the lord commander's chamber.
She took out the letter and read it to the group.
Merosska,
We are pleased to hear about the outcome of your altercation with the Black Earth cult, and we praise you for the capture of one of their prisoners. This noblewoman from Waterdeep has an interesting tale to tell, and we shall enjoy interrogating her further. Keep a close watch on the Sacred Stone Monastery. I want to know what our enemy is planning next.
Your beloved queen,
Aerisi Kalinoth
Savra admitted she didn't know who the noblewoman was nor who signed the letter. All she knew was that the lord commander had been acting strange lately, insisting that the Feathergale Knights must all learn how to master the elemental forces of air. In addition, most of the initiates were newly recruited by Merosska and all seemed to answer only to him. She had also seen them traveling to and from somewhere further north into the valley.
The adventurers offered to help Savra discover who Aerisi Kalinoth and the noblewoman were.
After resting for a bit, the group returned to the great hall, where they performed quite a performance that pleased the lord commander and the other knights at the celebration.
When the festivities were over, Thurl Merosska made an announcement to all in the great hall.
The lord commander looked to The Traveling Willbury and said it had come to his attention that the entertainers were responsible for the death of one of their own member, Darwin Eagleshield.
The other knights and initiates put their hands to their weapons. But at Merosska's order, they did not draw steel.
"Explain yourselves," he said to the entertainers.
The group tried to deny any wrongdoing, but the lord commander could not be convinced. He said the only surviving initiate to return from the patrol the day before had recognized the so-called entertainers. Merosska said he suspected, by the group's gear and weapons, they weren't entertainers but had the looks of adventurers.
Again, the group tried to deny having killed Darwin and one initiate.
Finally, Merosska asked if they had at least given Darwin, a noble, a proper burial as befitting his status.
The group said that if they had killed the knight--not that they had--they would have given Darwin a proper burial.
The lord commander said that a form of restitution was in order. The slaying of a Waterdhavian noble was a crime punishable by death.
However, Merosska said perhaps The Traveling Willbury, a name he found ironic considering the circumstance, could perform a task for the Feathergale Society. If they agreed, Merosska would consider the matter done. However, the lord commander said he could not vouch for the Eagleshield family, who most likely send bounty hunters after the group for killing a respected and young member of their noble family.
The group asked what the task was.
Thurl's face darkened. "Great evil lurks among these hills," he said. "Depraved cultists led by wretched monsters."
Thurl then told the group about the location of the Sacred Stone Monastery, a few days' walk into the southeastern Sumber Hills. He suspected that reclusive monks were harboring evil and wanted them investigated.
The group realized they had no option but to agree to the quest. Fighting all of the knights and initiates in the tower could prove deadly.
After the group agreed to take on Merosska's quest, he bade them all be seated and enjoy the feast prepared in honor of the 10th year of the founding of the Feathergale Society.
