Session 5: Devil's Kettle
General Summary
Before leaving the town of Caer-Konig, you were approached by a tall brooding figure wrapped in heavy black robes. Being a drow himself, he too was a miscast. The party agreed to let Kuudenroth join as you made your way south to Caer-Dineval. He mentioned that he had business to the south that would lead him to the whereabouts of a special tomb he was searching for.
The party set south and made your way down the frozen trail. Along the way, you heard the roars of a polar bear, cries of anguish, pain, and sadness. Coming on the scene you saw that she was stuck in a crude bear trap. After freeing the large polar from the trap you came to know her as Iorek Byrnison, a goliath werebear. Long ago she was a member of the goliath tribe at Wyrmdoom Crag until they had cast her out due to her curse. She has since become known as the “Winter Walker”.
After explaining how she was ambushed by kobolds whose lair was not far from where you were, you decided to help her recover her lost companion. After crossing the frozen lake and entering the Devil’s Kettle. You managed to defeat the kobolds, reunite Iorek with her snowy owlbear companion, and discovered the lava pool within the tunnel complex that the kobolds revered as a shine. You quickly discovered why, after Kuudenroth made his way across the lava pool, leaping from rock to rock over to a charred chest.
As he opened the chest a humanoid elemental figure wreathed in flame made it’s presence known. Ignoring the warning, Kuudenroth picked up a tomb from within the chest and as he did, his body began to float and his limbs began to expand when suddenly in a plume of blackish green smoke, he disappeared.
Using mage hand you further searched the bottom of the chest and found a ring made of the strange metallic black ice in the shape of a six-pointed snowflake (the Frostmaiden’s symbol). Careful not to touch it, Bulwark took a moment to identify the ring as a portkey with powerful teleportation magic. Just then, the flaming figure called out;
Alive as you but without breath, As cold in her life as in her death; Those worthy, can uphold her gifts Those not, cast away into the frigid drifts Upon her icy throne she has now awaken It is up to you, to stop the FrostmaidenThe chamber begins to rumble….
