Session 75: Sacred Stone Monastery

General Summary

Feeling unnerved about walking in trough the front gates, the party decided to seek a different route. Backtracking along the ridge side that meandered along the shallow river below, the party felt comfortable under the veil of night to attempt a stealthy approach. One by one the party made their way down the cliff-side into the river below; Eldred deciding it best to leave Veena behind. They were not the only ones however to lurk in these waters.

After a brief encounter with several aquatic creatures, the party was able to make their way to the dockside of the the monastery. Stealth failed the party when one of the dock guards boasting a bronze gilded mask noticed the floating dead carcass of one of the aquatic creatures the party previously encountered. Soon there after it was apparent that all of the monks fashioned similar masks.

As battled erupted, the element of surprise was completely lost when a fireball was unleashed upon one of the boats that was docked. The boat was seen being unloaded by several elementals and two humanoid figures. One a large male goliath and the other a male mage figure resembling the likeness of Larrakh; the individual whom recently escaped from the Tomb of Floating Stones.

The humanoid figure was able to Dimension Door away yet again, however the goliath charged across the dock seamlessly traversing through the difficult terrain created from seaweed overgrowth by Bolivar. As he approached the paladin, two strikes from his massive stone great axe began to turn the paladin to stone; however he was able to shrug off the effects.

An arduous battled ensured with the adventurers advancing into the rear entrance of the Sacred Stone Monastery. Their efforts however were for naught as they we already discovered. The group was approached in a civil manor by a monk, similarly wearing a bronze gilded mask, spoke in a tongue only Zephyr could understand due to his elemental heritage. The acolyte demanded that the party follows him to the temple for an audience with the Abbess Hellenrae.

Walking through the monastery following the messenger, the party passed by a courtyard that flanked the entrance to the temple. As they made their approach they saw the three head members of The Believers in discussion with several of the monks and witness each of the men get their throats slit simultaneously. They were put upon pikes as they walked through the courtyard without a word being said.

Entering the grand temple, four large columns of natural rock dominated a shrine. A wide set of steps descends into darkness in the back part of the room, hidden behind a slab-like stone altar. Large, copper-sheathed doors stand in the middle of the south wall, and smaller doors exit to the east and west. Two narrow windows in the north wall admit thin fingers of light from outside. Above the altar, a triangular symbol has been chiseled into the heavy stone blocks of the wall. The most prominent feature however was a colossal size carving of the great Elemental Lord, the Evergrowing Mountain Ogremoch.
