The Vestern Uninhabitable Zone
While the war brought ruin everywhere it went, nature would do the worst.
It was 1419, and the Imperial Army was planning its biggest offensive yet -- one that would finally put an end to the Coalition's push toward its borders. Three days before it was set to begin, an extremely rare meteorological event that became known as Black Snow descended on both sides of the front. Caused by the evaporation of Fleischkraft ichor, the acidic precipitation melted buildings, machines, and people into nothing. The damage was unimaginable, and its effects felt long after the last shot was fired.
The area affected (Covering the border of Musson and Cammesbourg) was deemed unsuitable for living. The VUZ would stand as a permanent stain on the world; a reminder of what total war could do to the land.
Geography
What was once a dense forest has been completely destroyed. Mounds of dirt and mud cover the ground with no sign of any colour. The trees that remain are little more than blackened skeletons, though their decaying forms still reach toward the skies. Rainwater pools in holes made from mortar fire and large imprints of Walkers, creating a musty atmosphere tinged with fog. The only living thing that seems to thrive in this area is Neufleisch. The fungus' red tendrils dot the landscape, giving the area a ghastly, otherworldly appearance.
Fauna & Flora
Although once a thriving ecosystem, the Black Snow completely wiped whatever creatures were originally living there. Taking its place is Neufleisch fungus, bringing with it a dank atmosphere and a pungent rotten smell. The fungus is so numerous that people who are in the area would become violently sick. Those that venture in unprotected end up dead moments later.
Many years after the war, studies of the VUZ put forth strong evidence that it would remain this way for hundreds of years. The corpses of soldiers and the lack of any predators allow the fungus to continue growing unabated. Efforts have been made to limit their reach with mixed results, and government action has only halted its spread. There is hope, but clearing the area of Neufleisch is still a long ways away.
