Pale Mountains
The Pale Mountains is a mountain range located to the north of Middenland, acting as a natural barrier between Middenland and the northern regions. It has gained its name due to the white, almost alabaster stone found here. For centuries this has been the territory of the Queendom of Rinn, a nation consisting solely of the Pale Dwarves.
Being an old mountain range, the slopes and peaks are more gentle due to extensive erosion. As such there is extensive vegetation on the mountain hills, especially located around the freshwater streams originating from the snow and glacial thaw at the top of the peaks. To take advantage of this, the Dwarves have created small settlements and farmlands at these places to be more self-sustainable in terms of food production. However the vast majority of Dwarves still live inside the mountains themselves. They have created entire cities with buildings carved out into the cavern walls and bridges built over deep chasms.
These mountains are filled with natural resources such as coal, iron and copper. But one of the main reasons the Dwarves have settled into these mountain ranges is the presence of khazalid gems. They are found in geodes in narrow mountain shafts deep underground and are immensely valuable. Most of the newer cities have been built very deep into the mountains to be closer to these khazalid mines.
Due to the isolationist nature of the Dwarves inhabiting these mountains, very few individuals of other races are present in these mountains and a similarly low amount pass through from Middenland to the northern regions.
