Pieces of Eight, Session 14: Return to Seaton

General Summary

One year after the betrayal of James Wavebreaker, the Pieces of Eight must return to Seaton and relocate Zangrim's parents before its too late.

Planning the Trip

Saltmarsh had changed a lot in the year since Wavebreaker's attack on it. The defense plans taken from the Emperor of the Waves had been sucessfully implemented by local labors making Saltmarsh secure from Sauhaugin attacks.
Zangrim Tarkelby and Vencyne Amakiir started having an affair, that Eyrs Thonich knew of. Likewise, Eyrs started a relationship of her own with Krag, the local Half-Orc gravedigger. Things were looking up, untl Councilwoman Vencyne received disturbing news from her former ally-turned-rival-turned-ally, Graicen Gothorn. Apparently, Zangrim’s family had been placed under house arrest by Duke of Seaton for not repairing the damages to the city.
The party assembled itself and began to plan a recue mission in what had once been the home of Eliander Fireborn. The party, Krag, and Xolec discussed a way to return to the sinking city of Seaton and liberate the Gnome’s family. Eyrs, Krag, and Xolec had also spent the last year researching leads on James Wavebreaker and the Scarlet Brotherhood, and wanted to pursue one in Seaton.

Sunken Streets of Seaton

The following day, the Pieces of Eight were delivered to Seaton by a horny and reckless cart-driver named Geoff. Geoff agreed to wait until nightfall at the city gate. He wouldn't wait longer because of the monsters of the Dreadwood.
The Pieces of Eight pushed through the gate and the putrid smell of stench filled their nostrils and touched their lips as they entered the city's walls. Things had declined. The city was more sunken than ever and the party wondered if the walls would even hold up for the duration of their trip. They stepped onto the empty flooded streets, and instantly regretted it.
White and slimy aquatic monsters shambled up towards the party from the water. The Abolethic Skum hit the party rather hard and the party responded by cutting them down. However, the party discovered something awful about the terryfying monsters. Vencyne and Zangrim correctly identified that something had transformed the townspeople of Seaton into the slimy monsters.
They cut through waves and waves of tentacled zombie monsters. Vencyne saw with her Powers Ethereal as her former neighbors were freed from a horrific spiritual imprisonment by their terrible new Abolethic nature. As they continued moving toward the Tarkelbys workshop and fighting Skum they became weaker and more tired. They tried to avoid more battles, and even took a different route, but they were ultimately cornered by three Skum Swarmers and a Skum Juggernaut when all of the undead children in Seaton coalesced into horrible Skum titans.

Reaching the Workshop

Eventually (with some help from Zangrim’s family) these creatures were defeated and the party reached the Tarkelbys workshop. Inside the workshop, Duke Feldren was waiting for them. He was suicidal. Vencyne had no choice but to stop him from wandering into the street and getting killed by the Skum.
The party listened to him drone on and on for a while. He explained the last few years of his life and how he had been magically manipulated by his three advisors (Siliris, Tricia, and Dory) who had been working for the Scarlet Brotherhood. They used charms to manipulate the Duke and control the whole city for their master, until Dory began tending to the Kraken and betrayed the others. The party continued to listen and began to make plans for dealing with a Kraken, but soon became aware of a new situation outside.
Arriving by sea was their old ship, the Sea Ghost and its captain, James Wavebreaker. James Wavebreaker looked very different. He seemed to be taller, younger, tanner, and stronger. He was sporting a different weapon, different clothes, and a big chest tattoo. He was also surrounded by his known enemies the Sea Princes.
The party all swallowed hard, and began to solve the problems they were facing. Eyrs reached into her pack and gave Duke Feldren a potion of bravery. He declined to drink it and the party responded by forcing it down his throat. Affected by the potion, the Duke became brave and he immediately shot a flare into the sky which alerted Wavebreaker, and caused him to turn swivel the Sea Ghost towards Seaton. Somewhere deep in the city, the party felt the Kraken react to the flare as well.
