In the present, many skyships are never far from port but there are still many that go on long journies. Skyships are an incredible leap in technology but wouldn't be very effective if we couldn't keep their crews alive. That is where the humble barrel comes in.— Nim, Half a Century of Skyships
An Old Technology
Barrels have long been used across
Breharan to store and preserve foods. Given the weight and the bulk of the barrels, it is unlikely that the
Skyfarers used them before giving up their nomadic life on the
skies.
They are capable of holding many foodstuffs for great periods of time. Only certain foods can be held in them, flour, dried beans, sugar, salt, oats, and grains are ideal. It is also possible to store liquids within them - which is common for
skyship voyages - but the purity of the liquids has to be very high or growths will occur.
The barrels are built sealed from the outside elements keeping the interior dry and reducing the speed of rot. They also do a very good job of keeping rodents and pests out of stored foodstuffs.

Barrel Races
In
Zinato old barrels are used for a regional sport known as barrel racing. This sport has indiviual competitors take to the rivers with nothing but a barrel and a paddle to see who can make it to the finish line first.
Barrels used for these races are usually modified to have a hole in the side which the rider uses to get in because the barrels do not like to float straight up in the water.
"Alright son, when I was your age I beat Dern in this barrel race. You have to beat his son."
