Muck Drudger Diet

Now watch closely little Amala. Someday you will have to prepare meals too. We do not have much to work with so we have to do what we can. We use everything that we are able to. Save the skin of the lungfish it is used for some tools.

History

The cooking tradition of the Muck Drudgers is only as old as they are. When the first people were forced from their homes and ended up there they worked with what they had.

Execution

The preparation of the meats is the first consideration in cooking. If Lungfish is not prepared well it may cause sickness in those who imbibe it. The meat must be cooked thoroughly to prevent this. It is an acquired taste.   The other staple of their diet is asperagus. The plant grows well in the mud and one plant will grow back year after year. The most common way to eat it is roasted or seared. If any spices are available those will be used on the asperagus.   Uncommonly, they will eat the meat of the Chanote. They are wary of people and usually stay away. Sometimes when they are hungry they will attack. This is when they are killed and eaten. Muck Drudgers will never eat one that has consumed the flesh of a person.   No spices grow in the region and are traded for when they are needed for special occasions such as the Partnering Ceremony.

Components and tools

Access to metals is very limited in the area so cooking implements are made mostly of wood.

Participants

Generally, in their society the young women will prepare the meals while everyone else is working. Then the entire community eats together. Meals are often accompanied by storytelling and song.
