Ralakush

Following in the family's footsteps.

"My grandfather took on his father's profession and became a carpenter. My father became a carpenter as well but many of those of his generation chose to not follow their parents. When I was young, my father told me to choose what I wanted to do and that if I chose woodworking, he would teach me. I may not have made up my mind but I have made some beautiful shelves."

Inheriting Skills

Long before the time of palmister the people of Zinato would train their children to take over their profession. This was known as ralakush - flow of the family. Refusing to take the mantle was considered very rude and had social consequences. The Drifters were in part a result of this practice as people took to the rivers to gain a little bit of freedom in the future of their lives.   Zinato has always been the home of skilled craftspeople and ralakush is - in part - responsible for this. People honed their skills and passed on the knowledge to their children who would improve further and pass it on again. However, in this new age, it is clear that there is no link between lineage and aptitude and that those who want to learn a skill will become better than those who learn it out of obligation. Each of the last few generations has found new ways to improve their work at a rate unprecedented by even the time of rebuilding. The skill ceiling has never been higher, only because ralakush was left behind.

As Time Goes On

Ralakush was once the only way that people's futures were determined along the rivers. As the upcoming generations yearned for more freedom of their futures, palmisters offered different paths - and created their own new path in the process).   Now, even palmisters are a thing of the past while everyone in Zinato enjoys equal rights and freedoms, and spends their days dreaming of what wonders the skies - and futures - may hold.
