Toreil's 2nd Detachment

The 'Boom Brigade'.

"Battles are loud but when the Boom Brigade joins the fray, they are deafening. If they are any indication, the sword will soon see its final battle and the clash of steel on steel will be replaced with the thunder of gunfire.   But it isn't just the firearms and the explosive sabotage. No matter how far they go their supplies never run low and their morale remains high."

Composition

Manpower

The 2nd has approximately 100 soldiers at any given time. Their supply chain usually employs at least that many.

Equipment

Tunneling equipment, animals, false-bottom carts, anything they need for a plan they acquire.

Weaponry

Blackpowder firearms and cannons are common weapons for the Boom Brigade, though they are relatively hard to find elsewhere. Powder horns, barrels, and trails are also weaponized by the group.

Vehicles

Horse-drawn carts ferry soldiers and equipment between locations.

Structure

The detachments of Toreil are irregular military forces. The 1st is a much more standard fighting force comprised mainly of melee combatants and crossbowmen but with a distinct hierarchy. The 2nd does not have this hierarchy, just a leader who reports to the governing powers. Within the unit people take positions of leadership when their area of expertise is required and stay aside to support others when it is not.

Tactics

Most Graran detachments are not a frightening force. Their numbers are large but their actions are predictable. The 2nd Detachment of Toreil is the group we should fear. New formations, tactics, and equipment come from that group with high frequency and defending against it is nearly impossible.
Defending positions with temporary fortifications is an effective strategy for the group. The sound of firearms, or powder trails, frightens horses allowing them to effectively defend against cavalry. The strength of the 2nd lies in their ability to adapt to situations and innovate new solutions. If a wall can't be crossed, go under. If a force is too large, create panic. When the storm hits, push forward.

Training

All members of the 2nd must undergo training to be able to load a blackpowder weapon in under 20 seconds. Safety training with gunpowder is required, though often learned on the job. Additional training is available for operating cannons and for construction.   Most members of the Boom Brigade are not veteran or elite soldiers but their technological edge and specialized training gives them the upper hand in many engagements.

Logistics

Logistical Support

A supply of food, medical supplies, and gunpowder is provided to the 2nd in the field by their large support crew, lead by a logistics specialist. This support crew is often expected to make the required supplies when they aren't readily available or funds are short. Craftsmen such as blacksmiths and carpenters are employed in this crew.

Auxilia

Former members of the Boom Brigade often return to aid the unit if asked. A common strategy of the small force is to build a militia force if they will be in the area for a lengthy period of time so that they may call upon it if needed.

Upkeep

Gunpowder is expensive to produce making the 2nd, man for man, the most expensive military within Grara. As an irregular force, they are provided with less money for supplies than the regular forces of the nation.

Recruitment

Compared to its counterparts, the 2nd has a less restrictive recruitment regime. Firearms reduce the benefits of height, reach, and strength allowing more people to serve in the detachment. The primary requirement is a willingness to speak your mind, to offer your opinion. This unusual element leads to more ideas and more solutions.
