TREANTS...Groves of the Great Salamance Trees, enormough white-pine-like trees, by far the tallest and most stately trees, unique to the Darven Forest. Threatened by Orcs, who love to destroy them. Also see Treants "Young Oaks"--not young at all, but more diminutive. Can live through droughts like no other plant in the Forest. Also see Treants

    • Poison Redback (black widow… diminutive, but eats things up to the size of a fawn deer, builds webs to latch onto creatures, usually less to catch them; very powerful poison, can kill small animals or smaller, damages STR and CON (recover 1 pt. Per day): Poison lasts 1 hour (one more for each size less). Spider will begin to eat victim, causing 1 hp damage per minute.

    • Bearberry Dogwood; pretty five-petaled flowers in the spring, bright yellow… berries in the fall (named from a time when bears were still common; now they are rarely seen)

    • Salamanca tree… grow tall and stately, straight, with smooth bark even in the oldest individuals. Logged over in the past 50 years further up the hills, still standing old growth in places down below, especially by Lake Tegg, but also south… The sacred tree of the Darven ranger-peasants, and of some forest-dwellers
    • known by lighter, more tawny bark, naturally peeling off in small strips and flakes

        Herbs and Flowers
  • Jewelweed, used to treat burns and skin irritations
  • Warrior weed: 2’ tall, spiked pink flowers in a bunch (leaves are potent pain relief)
  • Strawlpotatoes: Great red tubers grown in abundance by the Grimlocks.
  • Stooperbeans: Red beanpods grown by the Grimlocks in great, climbing stalks. Have a spicy flavor to them.
  • Stingitch Creepers: A crawling ivy, insidious; you must be looking for it or you’ll get it. Stings a little right away, then itches like crazy. Poison Redback spiders spin their webs, hoping for an already compromised victim… usually a hare or a fawn, or other small animals… Causes minor paralysis (check for large size is +3; small size is -1 to roll; tiny -3; Smaller than that -5): DC14 FORT, or STR and DEX reduced to 4 each / / / DC7 or both reduced to zero…
  • SmuddShrubb: Black, nearly leafless shrub, 2’ high, with extensive root system, roots can be ground for a painful but relatively mild poison
  • Snarly Willow, loves the shade beneath Jack Maples; snarls up these forests but good
  • flaunting whites--red tubers are tasty

  • Little Blue Bells: Grow on top of bluffs
  • Sharpgrass, in high areas, more rocky, can grow thick and high, provide cover, but also sharp
  • Maple Ferns, can grow dry (grow 3’ fronds by end of summer; dry out as summer goes on)--(ground up and drunk as tea, gives alertness (+1 spot and listen) for an hour,
  • Thimbleberry (white flowers in spring, late summer red berries (tart, edible but gross), grows in lowlands, near rivers
  •     Fungus and Mushrooms
    • Lollapies--Bunched brown caps, grow in clusters about 3” tall, although Fungads are much larger, 3 or 4 feet, and mobile, living things… Give a paralyzing poison by shooting out puffs and clouds of poisonous spores. Fungads are really just playful once they know you
    • Sticky Greens: SEASONAL: Slightly phosphorescent, found in late spring only. Can be dried and cut and put in salads, or popped on their own. Tasty, like limes.
    • Hugginses: SEASONAL: “Holy Reeds”--Fungus grows beneath rocks during the wet season, about 5” tall, just stalks of alternating black, yellow (then layer), and red. Poisonous, very small doses (one lick, and no more) increase Fortitude by +4 for two hours… Otherwise Save FORT DC15 or lose 1d6 STR and secondary 1d6 DEX.
    • Halflight Cavernbabies: Little nubbins with pink caps. Can be dried and hardened and worn for good luck charm.
    • The Crust: Harvested in sheets, in caves or underground; a lichen; used to wrap grains and vegetables for dinner. Strengthening, +2 to STR for one hour when eaten this way.
    • Dingbatties: Hallucinogenic, sends you on strange trips: Your environment is the same, just altered into a carnival-type situation. People too. Wander away, in awe. Lasts up to 6 hours. Rarely can reveal some kind of prophetic information.
