Emerald City and Quarry Town

Situated strategically in the Emerald Hills, the mining town of Emerald City has been booming for almost a decade after several rich deposits of turqoise and emerald, as well as veins of silver, were discovered in the area. The "city" has grown up like a boom town would: mercantiles, taverns, and various services (probably too quickly) taking up space and getting rich on the miners and gem traders who now overrun the limits of the town.   It is less dangerous than unpredictable. One never knows exactly what might happen in a tavern, or even. on the streets. There is a large contingent of emerald miners (especially these, as their work conditions are more deplorabe) who drink away their free hours, carousing.   Emerald mining is the most physically taxing of work in the Emerald Hills. It calls for brute strength and brute force, and a high proficiency with a giant pick-axe. Miners cut away bedrock bit by bit, all day, and merchants accompany them (without a lick of work themselves) to identify the mineral ore when it's exposed. There is always a palpable tension between the miners and their supervisors, but the gem-expert merchants are well protected by soldiers of their company.
Quarry Town
  • A kind of hovel, a halfway point between the mines and Alderham
  • Middle men and gem dealers, often shifty
  • Miners off duty and their debauchery
  • Mining companies
  • Lots of private guards
  • Not a lot of exotic goods
  • It’s a town for Mining Outfits; the Mining outfits are the law
  • Black Market active
  • Lawful neutral / neutral

Shanty towns for miners (quarry town much more run-down and rowdy)
  • Mining Companies provide guards against bandits
  • Bandits are only truly active at strategic places between towns on the Emerald Road
  • In taverns, Bandits might visit, to make trouble and thievery
  • Frequent brawls in Emerald City taverns...
  • Each Mining Company has guards; the guards don’t care as long as the goods and their merchants are safe
Lawful neutral as a rule, but chaos is always near bubbling over the top of the Guards... Emerald City is a tough assignment, and it get to the soldiers' nerves after a while Guards need to be diligent, and often end up being rough and cruel. They are not at all vetted for the job, and sometimes criminals or scoundrels will be hired. This does not end well.   ENCOUNTERS, EMERALD CITY OR ON THE ROAD (See slso "Quarry Hills"):
