Krakken
KRAKKEN
These malicious, draconic humanoid creatures inhabited the sparsely forested mountains of the central continent of Fel-Karri since any history records. They were an archaic race of creatures with awesome magical abilities. The land itself shaped as they shaped, and their connection to these mountains was utter and complete. For thousands of years they were masters of their environment throughout the mountains. They explored the regions in every direction but north. They never stayed, however, and these regions remained wilderness.
After the coming of humans to their borders 1250 (~700 byc) years ago, they withdrew even further in fear, and with hatred. The humans spread, and they knew of the Krakken, and they armed themselves well against their threat. Tensions grew over the centuries, and there were wars at the borders now and again. The Krakken worked and worked on a solution that would rid their world of humans forever.
Over two centuries, the wizards and sorcerers built up a field of power so strong that it created many portals to the Inner Plane of Fire. 700ya (~200byc), the mages brought forth a countless horde of elemental creatures into the material plane, and they directed these creatures to descend and destroy the human armies, cities, and people.
The plan was successful, and the lands to the west, south, and east were soon helplessly burning. The land over the mountains to the north would soon be next. The mages that had become so powerful had now been hooked, however, on their mighty abilities to destroy and to rule. They pushed their powers to the limit, bringing more and more destructive creatures of fire to do their bidding. They became insane with power-hunger, and they lost control.
Soon then the Krakken realm was also burning down. The Yeshen land on the north coast had been invaded and burnt to cinders. By 500ya (0 yc) the fires subsided and were going out. The elemental creatures, having consumed what they could, moved back to their planar portals and returned to the Plane of Fire. It is said that some are still trapped in the Material Plane, however, and roam the continent in anger and frustration.
All of Fel-Karri was laid waste, but for two regions: the peninsular land in the extreme northwest and southeast of the continent. Long before (600ya), the humans of the southern portion of the continent who could had sailed away east off the shores of the peninsula, and the Yeshens of the northern coast left on their own journey away from the continent within a century from then.
This is the story of the Krakken and The Great War of Fire, which is now forgotten by all save the Elves of the far Northwest, and the few remaining humans in the far Southeast. There may be some Krakken still dwelling within the continent’s interior, but no one knows of them. The Great War laid all to waste, and it has only just begun to grow back.
