Mushroom Forests
In certain places in the First World, there are proliferations of mushrooms and fungi, and the fairies that dwell in and among them.
"Among the giant amanitas, the fungads [mushroom spirits] standing around--grumpy, arms folded, frowning, foreheads furrowed, in a kind of council among them. They see foreigners coming to meet them...
"They are skeptical and suspicious, even a bit aggressive towards the alien people. They address the foreigners in Sylvan, if there are first worlders among them. Otherwise they have a crude Elven to speak..."
[Mushroom forests of the first world are very sensitive environments, and they can be easily contaminated if evil or "dirty" foreign influences enter the situation. In this case:]
"'A blight spreads across our land, and you--are you bringing but more cancer? What do you mean by bringing outsiders into our precious mushroom forest?'"
[Here one can learn the nature of the blight, if there is one. The amanita fungads can smell it on the breeze, even from far away. But they must be careful among the amanitas. The latter have good information and insight, but they are also the most tricky and grumpy.]
"'Hummmph to you if you feel like you alone can solve this problem, if you claim such powers. The nixies will never let you cross anyways.'"
"There are also crabcap fungads, dwelling within tall, slender-stalked mushrooms, with vaguely purple-pulsing, circular caps. These fungads prove to be enormously annoying and will tell and insult any outsiders, telling them off all the way to the lake, river, etc., tell them to get lost, especially calling any first-worlders among the group: Lump-Lovers or Goblin-Friends or etc.
"Crabcaps' game functions include building tension, but also giving information if cowed or intimidated or injured (although these actions will eventually backfire with a desire for revenge). They especially have information about any enemies or plagues or aggessors that may be in the broader area. They are difficult to befriend, but the task is worthwhile.
"They hoot and holler and tease and insult, but somehow with a lack of full conviction, more a frustration and desperation."
