Ze Harkemm, in Old Dwarven Verse
The Oldest Story: Ze Harkemm, "the Creation Story"
A Dwarven Creation Myth: Ze Harkemm, Verses in the Ancient Dwarven Language
The Eye, in the darkness, sees all.
It sees in the great darkness, wandering,
Watching nothing at all, Listening
To the silence.
First sight then, first sound, stone seeds:
All call of excitement.
Seeds of stone sewn in darkness
And the many thousands take root.
Gods, Mountains, Generations: Creation;
A light comes then, the pinnacle Dwarvenkind,
Dominion over Mountains, Hills,
Finally It resting.
Split up my people, populate
Worlds. Dig the land, dig the mountains.
But Eskil the Trolls and Giants and Dragons--
Eskil in darkness, seen not seen.
Eskil of Evil and Danger, seeds sewn
Sideways. Seeds sewn to separate--
But Balance--the Dwarvenkind.
Eskil, on even scale, but lurking without worry.
So in the end, Three Mountains then, and life’s circle,
And all is well with Dwarvenkind
And all will be well
Until the scale tips again.
For even the Eye must be balanced;
They that begot Dwarvenkind.
