Zephyran Religion

When it comes to Religion, like the Dwarves in the west of their country the Zephyrans generally follow the Zephion, a particular pantheon of grim and mighty deities. They take refuge in these gods, and they build their temples in the tops of towers, looking out over the land, be it the ruggesd hills, coniferous forests, or Lupine's Way to the north.   Zephyran's call on their gods, especially before battle if it should come. The different clans and tribes of Zephyra have their own flavor of the gods, and their own favorites or patrons. A few hold religious views that lie outside this pantheon, sometimes a kind of animism even, but these groups are rare and far between, and often in remote areas.   Religion in Zephyra depends largely on the tribe, town, village, or group. Stories might differ slightly, or greatly, depending. Different Deities will be held in highest favor, different rituals might be performed, etc.   Below are some concepts and deities followed by the Zephyra. The foundation of it all, seen figuratively by some, and literally by most, is the World Tree, the center and the content of the Cosmos.   THE WORLD TREE (Yigdrazz)
  • Make it to the Norns, at the very base of the tree, in time to cut the thread of fate for one creature or a whole group of some kind (to reverse fate, to change the course, very dangerous business)
  • Prominent Tri-Layer
  • Azgar, with a rainbow bridge (Rainfrost) to
  • Midar/Gaard, connected to Jotunheim (land of giants)
  • Niflhelm, the darkness, the underworld
  • Ratatosk, the mischievous squirrel, runs up and down the tree sowing confusing and discord (delights in this)
Or also Nine Layers of Yigdrazz (tree is somehow over and through them)
  • Azgar (eagle perched at the very top)
  • Vennari
  • Alfheim (light elves)
  • Midgaz (level 3)
  • Jutonheim (also level 3)
  • Nidavelir (land of dwarves, dark elves)-Dark elves might be substituted – A mountainous region with great winding and confusing tunnels and cave complexes.
  • Mining gear and leather aprons, in the mountains, “elusive, quirky, mysterious, unpredictable, sometimes grumpy, but generally likeable
  • Svartalfheim (land of dark elves, dwarves)
  • Hel (Nidhora the dragon, forever nibbling the roots of Yigrazz)
  • Niflhel (land of the dead dead)
At the base of the tree are three wells… Fountain of Mimir, font of wisdom; Hvergelmire: Swirl and Buble, source of all rivers; Urd (norns are here): the Well of Past, Presents, and Future   Crossing to Thule
  • There is a land across Lupine’s Way, through the Shroud, where it is said the Gods still dwell, and where the NIne Worlds are still intact. It is called Thule, an ancient word now lost to comprehensions. Bards say it means “Beyond the North Wind.” Bards all across Zephyra sing and chant and recite about it, but few Zeyphyrans (and these only legendary themselves) have crossed the Way to the Utgaard.
  • Zephyran holds close to an ancient polytheistic religion, although many in the more cosmopolitan East see it as fully allegorical. In the tribal west, the people keep the Old Religion close to heart. The gods are real beings to them, existing in person on the tree Yigdrazz, the world tree, upon which the world of the Zephyra locates. See religion notes below.
