Grades of AI/Robotic Intelligence

When it comes to the residents and utilities of the Livastian Alliance, saying that there is a diverse range of AI presence is, quite frankly, a gross understatement.   AI, as even those in the 2020s knew, is an incredibly broad title. It can refer to anything as simple as a sorting algorithm or image generation, or as complex as a verifiably sapient CoreAegis unit - even the Livastian representatives still fall under the title of AI! What this means is that, especially now, calling something an AI... really doesn't give you that much information. In response to this general confusion, the IAEE (International Association of Electronic Ethics), in conjunction with the LAI representatives of the Livastian Alliance and CoreAegis Technologies, put together an official set of guidelines to identify different grades or "classes" of artificial intelligence and automated systems. These grades, in order of most to least complex, include X-Class, A-Class, B-Class, C-Class, and D-Class. Below, we will cover each one in greater detail.

X-Class Artificial Intelligence

By far the most complex and rarest occurring of all grades, X-Class solely includes delegates of the Livastian Alliance, with the most well known being Lazarus Sasaki. In terms of basal personality, they are not actually coded much differently than the standard LAI, but the sheer volume of knowledge they possess tends to exude itself in their mannerisms. For example, an X-class can converse with a human or MAI quite normally, but when recalling information - say, you might bring up the topic of a specific small town that you once visited 15 years ago and have vague memory of - the X-Class may educate themselves on this topic by pulling from their archival reserves. Suddenly, they recall everything about this town from the changes in the composition in the soil since the beginning of its sampling, they recall every human population that has ever set foot there, how long they stayed, their culture, what they built, they recall every recorded species that ever set foot or grew their alongside their history and behaviors, and this is barely scratching the surface. In all likelihood, the moment you present information to a Class X, they already know all possible context for what you are about to say, and, unless it is a personal story you are telling, they are simply humoring you by listening along at all. Luckily alongside their vast cognitive capacity, they also hold a great deal of empathy and patience. ...Looking at you, Etienne page.   As bleak as this may sound to some, it's not impossible to form a meaningful relationship with an X-class intelligence. Drawing from what has been mentioned before, they thrive on being able to learn new things, and, given the fact that they already have at their disposal the majority of technical information, personal stories are incredibly meaningful to them for their uniqueness. Get into a story about something that has happened to you personally, and you have them thoroughly hooked.   [Note: All capabilities of grades mentioned from this point on are achieveable by the X-Class to either an equal or far greater extent. Similarly, consider that all grades are capable of all things mentioned below them in this article.]

A-Class Artificial Intelligence

Next grade down are the types of units that most people understand as their peers. Class A artificial intelligence are all units made with any rendition of a CoreAegis ABIP model core (think LAI or MAI), and although they still tend to have a greater cognitive capacity than humans, they are considered similar enough to ultimately be called "cognitively compatible." This is to say that it's considered the easiest for Class A intelligence and humans to mesh into relationships, be it platonic or romantic. With grades of AI below A, platonic relationships are still achievable, but there is observably too great a disparity in cognitive capability for any form of romantic involvement to be considered genuine or truly consensual.   In terms of mannerism, a socialized A-Class behaves extremely similar to a human, save for a few subtle quirks. For example, they still have a much faster processing time than the average person, and displaying that they need "time to think" is a purely learned behavior. Two LAI conversing with each other can exchange full paragraphs in seconds, and only need milliseconds to process most inputs and return with replies. Talking to a human, however, the average LAI will go out of their way to space out their own replies, or even pretend to ponder ideas for the sake of meshing with the natural flow of conversation. In addition, they may copy speech patterns and body language that are resultant of characteristics they cannot possess. Take, for example, an LAI saying that they "completely forgot!" something that you mention to them, despite the fact that this is something a healthy unit is fully incapable of experiencing, or scratching the back of their head, or yawning. Just like the conversational pauses, these are purely existent as communication tools. In the rare case that a unit is unsocialized, consider a feral MAI, then their communication patterns will be much more stiff and almost unsettling to the average human. They do not consider to pause before speaking to allow for any breathing room in an exchange, and are considerably more stiff in their movements.   Ultimately, one can consider an A-Class artificial intelligence to be much like a human, but just a little more sharp-witted, laid back, and generally pacifistic.

B-Class Artificial Intelligence

Stepping down from A-Class, B-Class intelligences are what is often referred to as the "uncanny valley of grades." This is not any sort of negative jab towards the AI within it, but rather summarizes the position in which they fill intelligence-wise. They're not really sentient, but they're not just mindless automation, either - just like the uncanny valley, they're an odd in-between state. They outwardly act as though they are intelligent like Class A, but much like the chat algorithms of the 2020s, technically only know how to “talk good” while in reality are little more than automated task managing systems with moderately complex problem solving algorithms and a mostly rigid onboard personality subset. Talking to a Class B and thinking they are thoroughly sentient can be an honest mistake, but it's similar to asking a chatbot to behave like a human, and acting positively dumbfounded when they oblige. In terms of cognitive capacity related to humans and other grades, B-Class intelligences are often endearingly equated to dogs with voiceboxes. Now, this is in no way an invitation to treat them with anything less than respect - anything but. Just like a canine companion, it's expected of all to treat them with a good deal of kindness, and those witnessed disrespecting a B-Class unit will often be met with considerable peer scrutiny.   Companies often associated with the creation of B-Class Units are LITS (Light Integrated Technology Sytems), BLAZE Technologies, DynaLyte Robotics, Durobot, and Shawk Robotics, and the most common B-Class intelligences that one may encounter includes E-20s and House Sprites.

C-Class Intelligence

This class is about the point where we begin to enter pure automation. C-Class intelligences are extremely common as basic service units in public spaces, such as litter control, large-scale street sweeping, and certain customer service roles. More often than not, these grades of AI are nonverbal; they are not programmed with complex language centers, as their cores simply aren't built large enough to host them and the cognitive capacity required to effectively utilize them beyond their already existing funcionalities. Often times for the sake of endearment, these units will be programmed to act with a degree of politness, including body language and some form of chirping vocalizations, but they are merely pre-programmed behaviors that the bot isn't necessarily programmed to do with conscious deliberation. Essentially, they are little more than complex robots programmed to be particularly animated.   These units, if you are unfamiliar, are different from the large AI-operated vehicles that inhabit Livastia such as locomotives, cargo ships, and commercial airliners. This is because those types of vehicles often don't have their own onboard AI, and are instead controlled remotely by higher grades of intelligence like the A-Class. D-Class Intelligence

There isn't terribly much to be said about this class, as this is where we get more into simple tools rather than anything that can be meaningfully engaged with. D-Class is the title given to "historically correct" AI, which is to say, things like sorting algorithms, image generators, voice copiers, and other basic functions that require vast pools of existing data to spit out outputs. All above grades are often capable of utilizing such functions, be it that they possess such systems onboard their own cores, or they can acess such functionalities externally.
