Cartomancy

Magic which uses cards to invoke energy, primarily for divination or communication. Some talented cartomancers can use their cards to direct offensive spells or seal aggressive spirits, though the latter is primarily an Asian custom.

Components and tools

The most commonly used cards in cartomancy work are tarot or harrow cards, but any cards with individualized faces can be used. Modern oracle decks or homemade symbol cards work just as well as traditional tarot decks. The important part is the meaning the caster gains from the cards in whatever configuration they are placed. Most cartomancers have a specific deck they prefer and often invest a lot of personal energy in their deck, rendering it difficult for any other mage to use properly. Some decks can seem to take on a life and will of their own, working counter to a caster's will if it doesn't agree with the purpose of the reading.
Mariah's deck hated me. She couldn't use her regular deck for any readings on me, even after Mariah herself had judged me more trustworthy. I brought a clean deck of my own to readings if it was important enough and she used that or her public handling deck. --Dex, 1999

Participants

Some cartomancers will assign specific cards to represent people in their lives to better connect their readings to the people around them. The noted tarot cards attached to various characters in this wiki were assigned by Mariah Stevens and Dex Lockard to help him with his cartomancy practice.
