Catalyst

Catalysts are centers for magical energy, almost like living leylines. They draw all manner of nasty beasts attracted to that raw energy and the thinning of the veil that happens naturally around them calls ghosts and other spirits like a dog whistle. Catalysts have a tendency to either die young or become amateur hunters in a hurry. Over the centuries, they have learned ways to control the energy into defensive wards and to decrease their own magical footprint.
