Background
In 1985, John Lockard and Ellie Nelson admitted to each other that they felt more than friendship, in spite of Ellie's age and John's marriage. John begged Ellie to go out and live her life without looking back, to experience everything until she felt like she knew what love really was. If she still thought she loved him after ten years, he promised to hold still, regardless if she wanted to kiss him or punch him.
Public Reaction
When Dear John was first published, it sparked dozens of fan theories on the identity of the titular "John" and his connections to the "John" of her book dedications over the years. In 1997, John and his children showed up at a book signing in Chicago, confirming for many fans that the poetry had been written for someone Nelson loved and had loved for a long time.
