Nosferatu
Most loremasters agree that nosferatu are either the children of Adam’s son, Cain or the children of his first wife, Lilith. There is some debate on the subject, but that they were present at the birth of the world is generally accepted. Nosferatu are a race which lives on the consumption of human or animal blood or the life essences of intelligent creatures. They are immortal beings and can only be made, not born.
The nosferatu who bites and drains a human but does not kill them is called that individual’s sire.
Nosferatu may be of any nationality and any age, though there are no known first generation nosferatu in existence now and second generations are rare.
They can be repelled with full bulbs of garlic (garlic breath isn’t enough), wickerwork of hawthorne or ash placed over doorways and windows, holy water and silver. Any bright light is irritating and a deterrent and they burn in sunlight at three times the rate of a pale-skinned human, but sunlight does not kill them. Nosferatu are capable of crossing running water without difficulty and are not bothered by scattered grains of rice or seeds.
While they appear to be alive in most senses, nosferatu are truly dead, without heartbeat or internal body temperature. Upon their resurrection, all bodily fluids have dried or decayed, resulting in a ravenous thirst which is often unidentified until a neonate is presented with a target. To this end, many sires keep humans as cattle. It is speculated that nosferatu exist which subsist entirely on the blood of animals due to having been presented with an animal as their first target after rebirth. This is highly debated and probably will continue to be until humans and nosferatu come to some form of peace in which information can be freely exchanged without risk of being someone’s dinner.
Regardless of what form of blood they consume, nosferatu all share the ability to mimic life. They can will their hearts to beat and blood to flow through their veins. Many of them breathe through an automatic pattern, but they do not require oxygen for survival. In something that many consider to be more mockery of life than mimicry, they also have the ability to will their tear ducts to produce “tears” in the form of blood. All body fluids are capable of being imitated, from tears to saliva to urine and semen or vaginal lubrication. This mimicry is extremely draining, as it consumes the noseratu’s recent meals and extrudes it as directed. After a particularly strong show of emotion or sexual activity, most nosferatu require a full meal within two hours or fall into a torpor.
There is no known cure for this form of vampirism.
