As per the letter of their agreement, Maddie's human body is killed and her soul divided. Half of her soul, the part which identifies as "Maddie Brewer" is sent to the Inbetween. The other half, often referred to as the dark half, changes her name to "Mad Len" and becomes a contract demon in Mephistopheles's employ. He allows her the freedom to choose which deals she will offer and take, but otherwise she is expected to serve him for eternity.
