Introduction to Lorannis
Welcome! This is your crash course on character creation in Lorannis. I'll keep this brief.
If you do not have it already, you will need to make a World Anvil account and let me know once you do - this is the site I will be using to organize plot, session notes, magic items, and so on and I will be unable to share certain pieces of information with you if you do not have one. Once you have an account, create a character and add it to the campaign (I will be sending you a link once your character has been created). Please just leave the character sheet blank for now.
Before deciding what type of character you want to play or where they come from, I recommend reading a few articles. You don't have to go in deep, but I recommend reading an overview of the gods (found here) and an overview of the different countries on Lorannis (found here). Like I said, you don't have to deep dive, but you do need to have a general idea of the different areas of the world before deciding who you want to play.
Next, you will need to take a look at two articles: Races in the Mortal Plane and Classes in the Mortal Place. These will tell you a little bit more about how your race and class will affect the world around you. Please also note that there are some extra backgrounds in the home-brew section if any of them catch your eye.
You may have noticed that some races and classes say that you need points in order to play them. You will get 5 points at the start of the game to spend on race and class, among a few other things. Check the side bar for more details.
After deciding your race, class, and background, you may roll for your stats. Unless you have a serious gripe with the 4d6 drop the lowest, that is the system we'll be using. Please let me know if you have a different stat generation you'd like to use.
Once you've finished putting your character together mechanically, please write a short backstory (at least three paragraphs) and send it to me along with your character's portrait. Please keep in mind that the art style the wiki will be using is based on Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons and Dragons art, so please use art in line with that (and make sure to include artist information so I can credit them!). You may create noble houses, towns, conflicts, etc. in your backstory, but I may ask you to adjust if it does not fit with the beginning setting for the story. If you have any important NPCs in your past, feel free to send me art and blurbs about them as well.
If you have any questions about anything, feel free to let me know. Happy creating!
P.S. Because this campaign will be focused very heavily on the divine and the interaction between faith, righteousness and morality, I recommend also reading Classes and the Divine. Please mention if there are any gods you worship - if any - in your character breakdown and if they are a part of the church devoted to that deity (all gods have information on their churches and how to join them listed at the bottom of their respective pages).
Ways to Spend Your Points
- Race selection - varies, see "Races in the Mortal Plane"
- Class selection - varies, see "Classes in the Mortal Plane"
- Background additions (you may take 1 additional background feature from a complimentary background; for instance, if you were a shipwright you could take the sailor's "Ship's Passage" feature with this purchase) - 1 point
- Common magic items (explain to the DM what you want - a weapon, or something that creates light, for instance - and the DM will either craft or find you an appropriate item) - 1 point
- Gold - 25 gp per point
- A level in a trade class (these are taken from the sourcebook "Witch + Craft" and will allow you to make useful tools, items, and art) - 1 level per point
