Leechbanes
A group of several plant species that are known to be repellant to both terrestrial and aquatic leeches. Primary ingredients in Leechbane Salve
White Leechbane and Red Leechbane
Two closely-related, aromatic shrubs with slightly different habitats and efficacies against various species of aquatic leeches. White leechbane is the more common species, found in wet habitats, named for the silvery look of its hairy leaves. Red leechbane is found in drier habitats, and is a more slow-growing and robust species, named for the reddish color of this plant's mature leaves.
Creeping Leechbane
Creeping leechbane is not closely related to the red and white leechbanes. It is a more potently effective plant, both repellant and toxic to aquatic as well as terrestrial leaves. Because of the plant's low-lying and climbing habits, it is less widespread and more difficult to find and harvest in the wild.
The export of leechbane plants is illegal, but products made from them, such as leechbalm salve and incense, are legal.
Conservation Status
All species of Leechbane are protected. Export of plants, living or dead, is illegal.
