Lockhinge Notes - Life in Greymantle
Halfling from a riverine family who was one of the more recent arrivals (relatively) to Greymantle, following the migration pattern of many before them. This particular branch of the family parked in Greymantle only two generations ago. They live in a stretch of marshland where they cultivate weaving and paper-making reeds. A few family units scattered in stilt-houses builts attached to large swamp trees for stability. Very little land that stays dry, so much of the family's time is spent in boats and on rafts. The stilt houses have porches where the family can gather and spend time with each other outside of the meager living space of their houses. They also own a large pontoon raft that they move between the houses and use for both recreation and work purposes. They don't prepare much paper themselves, just enough to use within their household and maybe for small crafts to sell. They do weave, however. Their woven products and raw reeds are both sold for income. They mostly sell to communities nearby, their best paper reeds get traded upriver to a paper mill. Once per season, they take their best reeds and woven materials to sell in the market at Lockhinge City, where they stock up on things they can't get elsewhere that they'll need before next season. This halfling's daughter dreams of becoming a musician, especially wanting to play at Lockhinge City, so in addition to letting her play with bands at smaller nearby communities, when they take their trips to Lockhinge, they spend more time there than they used to. They meet up with other Riverine Halflings in the city who have been introducing her around, letting her practice with them, and cementing some friendships. The plan is to eventually let her stay in the city for short periods of time to play with established bands, playing small gigs or helping to flesh out the band for bigger performances. She hopes to one day have an established place in at least one band and live in the city fulltime, before deciding if she wants to stay there permanently or travel throughout greymantle.
Half dwarven man who lives on the outskirts of the city, working as a dedicated hirudiculturist. The Fenborn side of his family does not love his choice of profession, so he is a little estranged from them. He has a deep love for his craft. He lives within the borders of the city, but works at standalone leech farm a little ways out of the city limits with a handful of other very dedicated farmers. They primarily raise milk and meat leeches, make some leech cheese, and also do some hunting and gathering for several species of leech further out in the swamp. They would like to develop their brand, and are thinking of getting into making and selling their own leechbalm.
Nomadic clan of hobgoblins, very peaceful, mostly subsistance living, though they do have a very small herd of Greymantle oxen and sometimes sell milk or the occasional calf to communities they pass. Despite a couple of the younger members of the clan really wanting to visit the city, they stay away from it for the most part.
A roaming black dragonborn, peaceful for the most part but she isn't against stealing or mugging occasional people she comes across in the swamp. She has two faithful crying hounds who defend her and help her hunt. Every once in a while her younger hound will have puppies, which she raises and sells to communities she passes through. She doesn't know her ultimate origins, but she was found as a young child by a small settlement of Lizardfolk and raised as one of their own. She always felt out of place and had a love of being alone out in the swamp, so she set off on her own as soon as she reached oyung adulthood. She has only been back to her home settlement once or twice. They miss her, but know her true home is not with them.
Tortle caravaneer, drives a large raft along a certain water "road" between several settlements. The raft is pulled by a huge crocodile named Toad Lily, who he has had since he was a child, many decades ago. With his armor and Toad Lily's formidable size, he has never had to fear the swamp (though he has seen many frightening things over the years), and this "road" that he forged himself years ago is now used by many trying to travel safetly through the swamp. He was once recruited to teach crocodile trainers who were training the animals to pull boats up the river, and it would have been a lucrative career, but he and Toad Lily grew restless and declined the offer to continue their contract.
Lizardfolk who grew up in a marine clan who farmed and gathered around the islands, now working at the Three Twins Bask, breeding and raising crocodiles. Most of their stock goes to important and well-paying individuals in central and western Greymantle, but their best individuals are sold to nobles in Lockhinge City. They have a lot of pride in their scrappy, sharply-intelligent (if not overly obedient) bloodlines, and they are of the opinion that their crocodiles could easily be developed into a separate breed that is just as "legitimate" as the crocodiles from Lockhinge Bask, especially since that bask already prominently features Three Twins blood in some of their main lines, such as that of the infamous Ghirusalk.
