Lockhinge Notes - Riverside
One of two places to enter the city, other being portside. Even if arriving overland, road from the north veers west toward the river and leads you into the city there. Otherwise obstacles like some walls and Drowned Quarter in the way. Siphon everyone in through the west. Series of docks and checkpoints leading into the city. Rivermasters direct traffic (often lizardfolk, aquatic species, or folks on crocodile) sending each group entering the city to the correct docks.
Very busy part of the city, easy to get run over, though they will stop and direct you if asked, very used to that. Focus on transit, licensing, industry, tourism, outfitting to go to swamp, fishing, or to head out into the river/estuary/sandbar areas between riverlets commonly used for activities like sports. The tourism stuff is all geared toward the average visitor, as the wealthy or important are expected to hustle off toward the Stone Quarter or other appropriate destination. Very working class there. There's nothing glamorous about Riverside, aside from the appearance of some of the sights/buildings that first welcome to the city. This area pretty dead at night however, save for very seedy dive bars. Not a very safe plac eto be at night, but at least theoretically easier for rangers and guards to watch (rangers from river and swamp and border of the city, and guards from keeping watch over the important and government run buildings here).
Aside from those government run buildings, the architecture is all very eclectic, and some of the city here is quite old, probably from when the river port and stone quarter were parts of separate clusters. Some of the places are known for their unconventional construction (one bar known for its weirdly skinny doorway. and another bar named "Big Step Up")
