Firebird

You hop out of the travelers exotic market, excitedly skipping down the street. A firebird chick clings to your shoulder, cheeping quietly. You turn your head, your tightly braided hair whipping over your shoulder. The chick is only six inches tall, and he looks like a fluffy orb of feathers. The small orange feathers haven't ignited yet, as he isn't fully grown. You giggle as he ruffles his feathers, flicking his wings out and shaking them. You turn your head back around, and continue skipping home.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The birds have two legs, slightly fluffy with feathers, and tipped with sharp one inch long claws. They are quite large, around two feet tall and with a wingspan of forty inches. They have long tailfeathers and large beaks. These, however, are not it's most defining traits. Those would be its remarkable feathers. They are long, orange and brown striped, and tipped with flames. These flames are usually slightly lukewarm or room temperature. However, they have the capability to make these flames as heated as they need to. This is useful to them for defense.

Growth Rate & Stages

When they hatch, they have slight fluffy feathers. They are harmless, blind, deaf, and weigh around a quarter pound. They grow, gaining their feathers as they get older. Soon, they learn to fly, leaving their parents cottontree nest. They then learn to hunt, becoming skilled predators. Once they reach full size, their feathers ignite. This occurs at around one second moon of age.

Ecology and Habitats

They tend to live in Andria, in the cottontree fields. They live here due to the abundance of small creatures, tons of nesting material from the cottontrees, and plenty of places to be comfortable and live a good life.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

They have rather sharp hearing and sight, similar to that of a hawk. They have a passive perception of 20.
Conservation Status
While this species is relatively plentiful in the wilds of Andria, there are many efforts taken to make sure it is plentiful. Due to the fact that Andrians believe firebird feathers can help relieve sadness and bring about joy, they are not allowed to be killed except in farms. In the wild, poaching them is illegal. They are kept in farms, where they are either simply plucked or killed for their meat and their feathers.
