Uncle Fred North was adopted by the McKeeny family when he was 4 years old. He spoke only a few words, but he pointed north, so Violet's grandfather gave him a last name to go with his first name. He grew up with Violet's father. Her father taught Fred how to write and get along with people in the village. He was heartbroken when his friend died accidentally, but he was worried more about Violet than he was himself.
