Koto Box

Nīwulá Valley's faithful of the Moon had a saying: "Only the newborn are without secrets." In this the celestials' servants were no exception. Unlike others, however, they came to invent a little clay box with strange, elaborate runes carved into it and power to protect the things they wished to hide.

At its core, the Koto box was a simple box made of clay or, later, wood which when closed would make itself be forgotten by any nearby living being (not only humans). While it could be of any size, most common were jewelry box -sized storages easy enough to carry, store and hide away. Every box had a lid perfectly molded to the box itself. Without the lid the magic in the runes and the box itself couldn't work.

The runes themselves were carved both outside and inside of the box. These could be of any size so long as the placement and form were otherwise correct. In between, if one had the means to pay for them, precious metals and jewels could be inserted as well. The boxes could also be painted with any colors and dyes, although some materials used might interfere with the magic.

Though invented in Nīwulá Valley by the followers of Moon, the technology and the boxes themselves eventually left the eastern continent and became especially popular in the many city-states of Shining Cove during the late First Age and early Second Age.
