Mižnar/Mižkat

Sages, wisemen and -women of the Noliur. In the First Age they were given gifts of secret knowledge by their ruler Unno-Iara the Hag Queen. Though in the southern regions of Tenwä the word meant "one who curses", the Nightlanders took the word as their own.

The female mižnar kept to small covens, building their hideouts to impenetrable fortresses where they would be at their strongest. These strongholds were also the sites to which the raiding and wandering Noliur clans returned every winter for shelter and to offer sacrifices to the mižnar and through them the region's spirits as well.

The male mižkat, on the other hand, are often as capable warriors as they are witches and sages. As a result, they take part in battle and raids side by side with the rest of their clan and rarely have a more permanent place where the spirits obey their will without question.

These roles are traditional for the witches of Nightlands, but exceptions may arise for many reasons. There are, for example, small clans where even the women have to participate in fighting to ensure the raids are successful, and thus the women are taught to fight. On the other hand, there are mižkat fighters who may be born in a way or wounded to a point where they cannot stay with the nomadic warriors, and thus are given to a coven where they learn another way of life.

Wolves of Udzar

There are those who pledge to serve Unno-Iara or the mižnar covens, as well as prisoners taken by raiders who have little option but to accept a life of servitude to the hags they despise. Those who serve well may be rewarded regardless of their previous status. But those who disappoint their masters may find themselves become one of the wolves of Nightlands.

The region of Udzar hadn't had wolves since the First Age. Not naturally born wolves, at any rate. Instead the howls one might hear echo in the biting night air of the Nightlands come from those turned into a wolf by a terrible curse.

The curse gives a human the shape of a wolf, though their size far supersedes that of any normal beast. The curse, when carried out by a mižnar or mižkat, often includes a curse of obedience, making the victim fully subservient to the curse's caster. And though these cursed individuals are often left loose to wander the Nightlands in packs of their own, one call from their master will force them sprinting right back to them.
