On the Matter of Dreams and Magic

To dream in the world of Lovenoma is a skill exclusive to humans. They are able to fall into a dream and walk in a dream garden of their own creation. At least some can.   As with any skill, not all humans in Lovenoma are created equally. There are those who fall asleep, wake up and remember nothing beyond the darkness. To them nightfall and morning are seperated by a single blink. Yet on the other side of extremes are the dreamers who can carve out entire worlds in a single night. Their will determines the rise and fall of mountains, water, even civilizations. They are, in a sense, gods creating their own little realm beyond reality. And when they wake up, it all disappears, only remaining evidence left in the dreamer's head as memories.   While most of the world claim this skill is one a person either has or doesn't, Ruňans claim dreaming is learnable ability, though the amount of effort required may vary from one individual to another, and in the end not everyone wants to learn at all, preferring the real world over the imagined. One of the ways the skillful sages and wisemen go about teaching their apprentices is through sharing dreams, where the teacher enters the apprentice's dream and helps them become more aware and in control.   This dream-centered cultural aspect never truly appears in the more southern regions, perhaps due to the involvement of their own gods and other divine creatures. The nature of these deities and their worship perhaps affected their ability to dream until the end of Silence, by which time they had all disappeared. At least their physical forms had, as in dreams their influence may yet be felt.
Dreams, and the ability to dream, is also closely connected to one's ability to learn magic, for lack of abetter term. The shaping of reality to one's own wishes, not wholly unlike in the dreamworld. Outside of dreams one draws power from the (normally invisible) "cracks" between realms to do their will. And though they cannot be seen or otherwise directly observed by most, the most skilled can learn to "feel" their presence and how it affects their surroundings - as it often does.   Lastly, there are those who become obsessed with dreams and dreaming. This could be because of the power an individual can have in dreams, or a way to escape reality when it seems daunting or overwhelming. Whatever the case, those most obsessed with dreams are usually those most gifted in the skill of dreaming. They do all they can to dream a little more, to spend more time in their fictions while their real-world body rots away in some forgotten corner of the world. It can be difficult to stop these addictions as of course no one can survive without sleep.   These dream-addicted become all the more powerful and influential in their dreams the more they do it, and the more their skill grows the more they desire to remain asleep forever, until eventually they are unable to wake up.
