Water of Life and Water of Death
The Water of Life was derived from a small waterfall that trickled out of a wall in a chamber beyond the Cave of the Sleeping Bogatyrs. In the same chamber stood a basin containing brackish water, which turned out to be the Water of Death.
The power of the two types of water were discovered after much grief, and trial and error. Though they radiated residual evocative and necromantic magic, respectively, by themselves, they had no power. However, when placed into the gold and silver ladles acquired earlier in another part of the complex, they could have the most wondrous effects. The Water of Life, when poured out of the gold ladle, could bring them back to life. However, doing so without first pouring the Water of Death from the silver ladle resulted in the person coming back to life with all the wounds they had prior to death, and pouring the Water of Life onto a statue that had not been previously treated by the Water of Death caused it to have a noxious reaction to the stone. Pouring the Water of Life onto a living person caused an explosion of searing light, which could obliterate a normal person.
The Water of Death, when poured onto a dead body from the silver ladle, caused a body to become whole, and all its wounds to disappear. Pouring it onto a petrified body that had become a statue caused it to become flesh (though still dead). If such a body were then treated with the Water of Life poured with a golden ladle, the person would come back to life. Pouring such water from the silver ladle onto a living person drained them of all life, and could easily kill a lesser person. The Water of Death placed into the gold ladle also created a noxious reaction. Misha had the misfortune of experiencing both types of mishaps, but managed to survive each ordeal. It was Agapia who had the sudden insight that when dealing with a dead body, the Water of Death had to be poured first.
The two types of water are obviously very powerful, and highly desired items. However, their magical powers remain latent without the use of ladles, and the ladles, it turned out, could only be used a handful of times before their activating power drained away. The waterfall and the basin remain in the caves, but the ladles no longer work to give the waters their potency.
