Some bumpkins from an out-of-the-way village are invited to woo a local beauty, but find themselves over their head, as she turns out to be a handmaiden-in-training of the old witch, Baba Yaga. The Grandmother sets them tasks to find their fortune, and gain entry into the domain where ancient secrets yet lie, waiting to be uncovered. Having fulfilled tasks set for them by Baba Yaga, local heroes have entered the Otherworld, a parallel plane that serves as home to monsters, antediluvian races that have seen better days, magical realms like the Thrice Tenth Kindgom, as well as the Old Gods, who still strive to claim control of the mortal world, now ruled by followers of Gaal the Redeemer. Now, the Crone has charged them with traveling to the Land of Shadow in the far north of the Land of Nor' to learn whether its rulers have remained loyal to her. But as they progress, minions of other powers - Karachun (Grandfather Frost) and worst of all, the Dread Lord Koshchei the Deathless - try to lead them astray, by force, guile, or temptation, and the Yokels must find out why.
