The Askdalr Assault
Prior to the conflict, the upstart Hyperion Empire had expanded their borders from the Heartland, through the Severin Valley and what is now the Kingdom of Nerimore and across the Maramis Forest. There had been increasing reports from the north of an undead menace that was terrorizing the countryside of Upper Maramis, as well as the Kaldrfold Mountains. Seeking to free those who were stuck under the rule of the undead, as well as take the opportunity to further expand their borders, General Hedrok Tunkan turned his eyes to the north and began plotting an attack on Kaldrfold.
The armies created by the Latinfylkir, or Dead King, were among the first large scale magical creations of the Celestial Era, and they would be the basis of many more to come.
The Conflict
Prelude
After many quick skirmishes across the Plains of Venir north of Maramis, General Tunkan was slowly pushing the armies of undead back to the Askdalr Pass. Scouts brought reports back of a stronghold at the pass that guarded the gate leading into the Kaldrfold Mountains. At the stronghold, there was a large contingent of undead backed up by a regular, humanoid army. Their numbers far outnumbered that of General Hedrok Tunkan, but there was no time to wait for reinforcements before the undead were unleashed and surged back into the Plains of Venir. The Latinfylkir, while not present himself during these battles, had been keeping a close eye on the progress made by the Hyperion armies and began amassing as many undead soldiers as possible.
Battlefield
The battlefield of Askdalr was a narrow valley of snow and ice. The Kaldr Herlid fort at the pass had, until this point, never been tested for its strength, and it was unknown how they would fare against it.
The Engagement
Mustering all of the forces he had, General Tunkan launched his assault just before the first light of dawn, hoping that he could surprise them and end the battle quickly. Flaming rocks hurled by their catapults and trebuchets soared overhead, slamming into the walls of the fort gate mostly ineffectively. A sort of magic barrier had been placed on the stone and wood, protecting it from the initial siege. Not willing to admit defeat, the general led his foot soldiers in a head on assault against the gate just as the undea were swarming out to meet them. Archers from both sides slung arrows, their metal digging into their targets. The catapults and trebuchets continued to launch, thinning out some of the undead horde, but it still proved too much for the Hyperion forces; there will simply too many of them.
Facing mounting losses, General Hedrok Tunkan searched for anyway to turn the tide of the battle and managed to find one, albeit one that entailed great risk. A narrow pass led up the mountain and to the other side of the walls of the fort, just wide enough for a few horses to move side by side. He brought his cavalry, along with some foot soldiers near the pass, and snuck through the pass. Once on the opposite side, they were able to attack the Herlid forces from both sides, effectively pincering them. The surprise attack was able to dispatch many of the living soldiers of the Herlid before they were able to mount a counterattack, routing them and forcing them into a quick surrender. The remaining living soldiers were taken prisoner as the rest of the Hyperion Empire's army returned the undead to their graves one by one with the rally of seeing their cavalry take the interior of the fort.
The battle a success, albeit barely, the Hyperion Empire rested and awaited further reinforcements to continue their campaign into the mountains.
Meanwhile, the Latinfylkir was watching from above, carefully surveying the battle, and slinked away, returning to the interior mounts of Kaldr to his stronghold at Weveida at the far north end of Kaldrfold.
