Tiempodeber

At the age of 18 all Clansfolk men are drafted into the army for 3 years. This referred to as tiempodeber and is considered to be a great honor and right of passage. Exceptions can be made due to hardship or disabilities, but they are generally not sought due to the cultural significance of tiempodeber and the willingness of the military leadership to assign skilled tradesmen, healers and the disabled to noncombat units focused on utilizing and further developing their strengths and skills. An exception, when sought, must first be approved by a local judge and then sustained by King Silverio Chronos himself. 

Time Clan women may also do a tiempodeber, although it is not required. It is most commonly done by the lower class women, although strong willed middle and upper class women will also do it along with women wishing to escape their current circumstances. Given that basic wages are paid on top of the room and board, less wealthy young women can save up enough to have a decent dowry by the end of the 3 years causing it to be a popular option amongst younger sisters or those whose parents disapprove of their preferred match. While the career soldiers have mixed gender units, the tiempodeber units are segregated by gender.
