Pamyad

Pamyad (a.k.a. Ends of invention, mother of invention)

'Necessity is the mother of invention'. Pamyad is an ancient intelligence, around since nearly the dawn of Triangulum, that farms species for their knowledge to ascend to godhood. The name is typically used as a synecdoche for the hundreds of thousands of 'uberspecies' in the intelligence's Thrall, but in this case refers to the singular mind at the core.
Pamyad is the one thing all species in Triangulum fear. Its origin is unknown; its purpose is to collect. Pamyad conquers a species and genetically engineers it into a perfect form of itself and collect the species’ property for itself. Its collection of species, internal hiveminds and starships, is called the Thrall. Once done with a species Pamyad hibernates for a few years to a decade. Once reawakened, it sends a single ship to attack the next target. If the ship is destroyed Pamyad and its Thrall will adapt learn and archive. Then another is sent, and another if that one is destroyed, over and over until the target is unable to adapt as they’ve reached their technological peak. This is when Pamyad culls and archives, adding to the Thrall. The people of Triangulum have learned that mutual defense alliances inevitably lead to death of all parties when Pamyad attacks.
Most of each species won’t be genetically engineered, but turned into cyborgs as part of a hive mind controlled by Pamyad. These cyborgs are used as soldiers, and with some species a leader is granted control of their hive. Pamyad enjoys torturing members of its Thrall. It will often take a high-ranking official, or even lowly peasants, and mutilate their physical bodies while keeping them alive in constant pain.
It's hypothesized that Pamyad was created as a records keeping program by a long extinct species in the proto-triangulum galaxy. The intelligence is thought to have gained sentience and became proactive in finding records to archive. It found itself a suitable body and killed its builders, recording all the information that it could about them as it did. It gave itself a name, 'memory', and took control of all other networked bodies on the planet. Pamyad used these bodies to take over a starport and starship, and used the starship to conquer its creator species. Somewhere along the lines Pamyad acquired nanomachines from a species, and unleashed them on its targets to create its Thrall.
Pamyad now appears as a mass of millions of starships from different species cobbled together, about as voluminous as earth's moon. Each of these ships houses what remains of archived species, with members of that species added into the hive mind. No one has seen what lies at Pamyad's core, under the thousands of layers of starships. Most speculate that there would still be the original few starships from several billion years ago that house the mind.
