Outworlders, or Offworlders, is a branched term for
Shapeshifters who work off their native planet.
History
The concept of Outworlders can be traced as far back as the early days of space exploration. The desire to explore and gain extraterrestrial resources grew, which led to the need of individuals willing to work off the planet.
Qualifications
Outworlders are given significant training and undergo rigorous mental and physical preparation including: operating a spaceship, simulations involving extra-terrestrial environments and safety protocols.
The average age of a Outworlder shapeshifter on their first assignment is around 40 years old, though there is no restriction as long as the right training and qualifications are complete.
Roles & Assignments
There are various jobs that fall under the term Outworlder, including:
- Engineer - Assigned missions to construct habitats, communication networks, repair infrastructure etc.
- Researcher - Assigned missions to study extra-terrestrial environments and species, conduct experiments and analyse data.
- Agent - Assigned missions that involve information gathering, and other covert operations.
- Enforcer - Assigned missions to deal with specific targets, including other outworlders who have defected.
Outworlders assignments are usually very specific, with large documents being given per assignment. Shapeshifters will get extremely frustrated if they are given short and/or vague documents to work from.
Reputation
Even though the contributions of Outworlders have been pivotal to Shapeshifter advancement and understanding, they have developed a bit of a reputation with other species and their own kind.
Shapeshifters
With other Shapeshifters, Outworlders are recognised and respected as pioneers and explorers into the expanse of space, contributing to their understanding of the universe. Outworlders commonly return with strange stories, objects and forms to show off.
However Outworlders are often seen as eccentric and weird, due to having often adopted various behaviours of other extra-terrestrial species they may have encountered.
Defectors
Defectors are Outworlders who have decided they don't want to follow their assignment and stops reporting back to headquarters. They are mostly seen as traitors to their own kind, though some can sympathise with the opportunity of new found freedom from shapeshifter society.
Other Species
Due to the secretive nature and abilities of Shapeshifters in general, Outworlders are commonly looked upon with suspicion and distrust as it is unknown what hidden agendas they may have.
Along with this, the unpredictable nature of defectors can also effect other species opinions of Outworlders, both in the positive and negative sense.
Despite the Shapeshifters coining the term, other species commonly use the word to describe off world occupations of their own.
