Surah

Surah is perhaps the most well known name on Macalgra, much as for the myths surrounding his heroic feats as for the empire that bears his name (Sura Empire). He is variously identified as a god or viewed simply as a historical figure.
Following his death, his descendants ruled the Sura Empire from 1 to 887 YSB, when the Wa'Senet Kibmehk dynasty secured control. The House of Surah renamed the city of Ryseum and the empire in his honour, partially in an attempt to establish a cult of personality to secure their own reign.

Personal history

Surah was born in 1092 RC, in a village near the ruins of the abandoned city of Ryseum. His childhood is not documented, nor is his parentage, but historians agree he was likely the son of a village medicineman or the extended family of a village chief; though not a prince, he is recorded as of esteemed lineage. Rare mythological accounts claim that Surah was the son of the fire god Tastrof to a beautiful human maiden.
He was renowned for his athletic prowess even as a teenager, and the mythological and historical accounts of his history blur from there onwards. The mythological tale recounts how Surah slayed a demon at age 17 to save village children who had wandered. Historians present the event as a wild animal attack that he repelled. He was elected chief at an unusually young age, probably around 20.
The Urcifer tribes, nomads from beyond the Nimula peninsula, had been raiding the region for slaves and food for several decades by this point. Spurred on by the threat, Surah united his village and their allies and re-occupied the defenses of Ryseum. There, he lead a defense that repelled the Urcifer.
Surah led a revitalisation of the ruined city, allowing them to repel Urcifer raids permanently, and Surah was crowned King of Ryseum by his people. The agricultural industry of the peninsula was quickly revitalised, with some claiming Divine blessing, but likely due to nothing more than because of the new found peace.
Surah died at either 90 or 303, depending on the account.
