Anomalocaris (ah-NOM-ah-LAH-kariss)
This horse-sized creature resembles a flattened, armored worm with two rows of flippers lining its body and a set of fins at the tail. Its head ends in two clawed appendages, which twitch and pull towards a central, circular maw.
Primal predators of the most primitive seas, the anomalocarids mostly corral and feed on jellyfish, salps and other gelatinous organisms. Their giant cousins will feed on such creatures, but also expand their tastes to faster, better protected organisms—even aquatic humanoids. Their pronged mouthparts act like claws to snag and tear at prey, holding it in place to bite with their odd, sphincter-like mouth. The creatures were hunted to death by the earliest inhabitants of Maeon, but were resurrected by the Goddess Larocia. They currently dwell in the deeper portions of the sea of mirrors, having evolved to live in the dark deep sea.
