Floodwater Kobolds

Tucked in little neighborhoods all around Kano, the Floodwater Kobolds make their homes in out of the way places, trying not to be noticed. The arid climate of Elys is far different from what they once considered home, the marshy forests of Auvyx.

History

The kobolds of the Floodwater reaches were once part of the northern and western clans, unconnected to each other. Many years ago, however, a massive tidal wave struck Auvyx and a number of the villages on the coast were flooded. Some of the survivors fled inland, but others took this as a sign to leave. Kobolds fled in small fishing vessels, some of whom followed Elysian vessels or were picked up by sailors. Elys, being the center of trade in the Three Point Sea, was where most of the kobolds ended up. The largest of these floodwater clans is in Kano, the capitol of Elys.

Modern-day

The floodwater clan of Kano occupies a region of the city known as the Breach, typically defined as the area to the west of the river. It is a maze of a neighborhood, built quickly and often home to people who want to stay away from the eyes of the three hills. Unfortunately, this leads to a high rate of crime in the area, as it is populated by smuggling rings and illicit merchants. The kobolds occupy homes surrounding the crumbling tower on the northeastern edge of the breach, with many living in the tower itself. Many of the buildings have been modified to have similar aspects to Auvyxian architecture, such as domed roofs and a three-dimensional living space featuring nets and lofts.

Culture

Like many other kobolds, Floodwater kobolds have a strong sense of community. Multiple groups live in the same house, and since they don't have a strong connection to family, sleeping spaces are often combined. Following the Auvyxian customs, siblings tend to be eachother's support system. However, since the floods, the kobolds of the diaspora tend to have smaller litters and there are many kobolds who are born as only children. This leaves many of them without a support system, so adopted sibling bonds are common. Many children are also adopted by Elysian parents and become tied to both cultures, able to form strong bonds with their Elysian siblings.   Basket making and net making are art forms the diaspora is known for, combining traditional Auvyxian crafts with Elysian weaving techniques. Baskets in kobold culture are used for everything from holding infants to rafting, depending on the size and consruction.   The floodwater kobolds retain many ideals from their homeland. Appearance ideals are even stronger compared to the island kobolds, with features that distinguish them from the Elysians, such as stocky stature, flat noses, olive-toned skin, and long tails. Influenced by Elysian culture, they place a higher value on defined romantic relationships, as opposed to the loose and flexible relationships of their homeland.   Due to the scarcity of resources, fighting skill and dominance is valued among the kobolds, with frequent non-lethal confrontations breaking out. They are expected to stay between two or three members of the group, and rarely actually devolve into fighting. There is an unnoficial pecking order among groups and indiviuals, determining who controls the resources they are given.
