Dulandir

The dulandir are mostly halflings, though any kind soul is accepted into their homes if they don't cause trouble, though few of the "large folk" stay long.
Outside the largest of cities, dulandir settlements are curiously bereft of walls, instead relying on the safety of "hobbit holes" in case of attack or predators. Never more than a hundred metres away, access holes to a subterranean network of tunnels allow the dulandir to quickly avoid danger and pop up when their foes least expect it. These tunnels are only just large enough for the largest member of the local population so many non-halfling people are unable to leave the entrance shafts. Many halfling homes are built into hills and descend below the ground, connecting directly to the network.
Despite their tunnels, most dulandir operate on the surface and enjoy the sunshine as they carry out their humble daily lives. The dulandir are primarily farmers and their farms are rich and prosperous, providing food that is traded for other goods with the dunirr clans. Dulandir lives are quiet and calm, punctuated by celebrations of significant birthdays and other milestones.
Simple meals are preferred by the dulandir with meats, breads and cheeses made from recipes refined over generations. They have a particular fondness for mushrooms which are cultivated in their tunnels and harvested throughout their forests.
The dulandir have also cultivated a particular variety of fern to be smoked for its mild psychotropic effects.
