Chapter 3 ~ I Love it When a Plan Comes Together

~Wydolm 35th, Year 567 of the Age of Reclamation~       Cybil groaned as she slowly opened her eyes. Light poured through the thin cloth that surrounded their cage. She stretched on the floor but stopped when she noticed that her legs felt wet and sticky. She looked down and noticed that Nana was already up and wiping down Belldandy's face with a partly clean cloth. Belldandy had her head lowered, The shackles the only thing preventing her from falling over.   "Okay, Belldandy... Look at me, look at me." Nana said.   "W-Whats going on?" Cybil asked as she sat up.   "Uhh, It's Belldandy..." Nana said.   "I...I'm fine..." She said as she raised her head a little.   Her skin was pale and clammy. Sweat rolled off her body. Her lips had traces of vomit still stuck to them. Cybil looked down and realized that it was what was on her legs. Belldandy had vomited on her.   "What wrong with her?" Cybil asked ignoring the filth on her legs.   "She's coming down." Nana said as she wiped Belldandy's lips.   "What?" Cybil asked confused.   "Sombra root. It's wearing off." She told her.   "I'm fine... I.. I can still teach you magic..." Belldandy said.   "Absolutely not! You're not in any condition to do Transference again." Nana said.   "She's right... Don't push yourself..." Cybil said looking at her.   "What iiis the plan?" K'Tara asked.   Cybil turned around to face the lizard woman. She could also see that Nadia was awake and looking at her through the small bars of her little box.   "Plan?" Cybil asked.   "To escape..." The bird woman said.   Cybil looked over at her. she was still laying down and turned away from her, but was apparently wide awake.   "Uhhh..." Cybil said as she looked back to Belldandy.   "I'm fine..." Belldandy said trying to reassure Cybil.   "Ummm... Alright... So, I know Stygian Mind Fog and Vulcan Palm. What can we do with those?" Cybil asked turning to the others.   "How would we know? It's your magic..." The Birdwoman said.   "... Has anyone ever told you how helpful you are?" Cybil asked her.   The bird woman turned her head towards her and slowly sat up.   "Maybe I don't want to help someone I just met!" She raised her voice.   "I'm in this cage just like you! I want to get out of this cage, just like you do! If you don't want to help us, then fine! Say hello to your new owners for us." Cybil said loosing her cool.   "Okay... She getsss it. Let's think thiiis through together." K'Tara said to both of them.   "Fine with me..." Cybil said.   "Do what you want..." The bird woman said.   "W-What does your magic do?" Nadia asked nervously.   "...Stygian Mind Fog lets me project a nightmare illusion at someone else. And Vulcan Palm lets me heat the palm of my hand to 200 degrees Celsius. Both will last for 5 seconds... Wait, no, scratch that... Stygian Mind Fog will last for 10 seconds thanks to my temporary Boon." Cybil said as she looked back over at Belldandy and Nana.   "How about you use Vulcan Palm to set the wagon on fire? Then they will have to stop and let us out of the cage." Nadia said.   "Hmmm... Good start... Then what?" Cybil asked.   "Uhhh... Then you use Stygian Mind Fog to... Wait... That will only work on one person right? They see you cast somthing and everyone else will attack you... Never mind..." Nadia said.   "It was a good start..." Cybil said.   "How about we set the wagon on fire and then make a run for it once they let us out? I'll cast Stygian Mind Fog on the person that gets the closest to us... and... the others might get distracted long enough for us to escape?" Cybil said.   "We all have 'Ssslavery' enchantment on us. All they would have to do iiis yell at us to ssstop." K'Tara said.   "Damnit... Okay... shit..." Cybil said thinking.   "Gods... You are all so dense... If we can't outrun them then you make them stay with the wagon!" The bird woman said annoyed.   "Oh? And how do we make them do that?" Cybil asked.   "Use your Mind Fog on the coachman. Make him overturn the wagon. These cages are strong enough to hold us but they will break if the wagon does. When that happens you set the wagon of fire and we escape into the forest while they battle the flames." She said.   ".......... Okay." Cybil said.   "Okay? Okay!? Do you have some sort of problem with my plan?!" She barked.   "No, I was just saying okay... As in, 'Okay, Let's do that.' " She said to her.   "... Oh... Okay." She said back with a cough.   "You all heard it right? If anyone can think of a better plan, now is the time." Cybil said.   The rest of them were quite.   "Cybil..." Nana said.   "What is it? Do you have another idea?" Cybil asked as she turned towards her.   "No... It's Belldandy, I don't know how to help her escape." She said.   "What? Is she that bad?" Cybil asked.   "No... She's shackled to the cage..." Nana said.   Cybil looked from Nana to Belldandy. The shackles were not bolted to the cage but the chain was looped around one of the bars. Even if the cage did break, It would have to break this bar in particular to free her. She didn't know what the chances were but there was a high probability that they would have to leave Belldandy behind.   "It's fine..." Belldandy said.   "No, it's not..." Cybil said.   "Yes, it is... I would rather die helping you all escape, then live as a slave." She said.   "... Belldandy..." Cybil said.   "M-Me still being here will... help distract them." She said.   Cybil coughed and turned away from her. She looked at the others. K'Tara and Nadia hung their heads. The bird woman just averted her eyes.   "Okay, we understand..." Nana said.   Cybil turned around and stared at Nana questioningly.   "It's what Belldandy wants. It's not up to us to tell her no..." She said.   "Haaa..." Cybil breathed out and nodded.   "Okay... Then, let's do this... Are you all ready?" She asked.   "Yesss!" K'Tara said.   "Yes! But one of you has to carry my cage!" Nadia said.   "... I'm ready." The bird woman said.   "I'm good to go..." Nana said as she wiped some sweat from Belldandy's forehead.   "I'm good." Belldandy said with a weak smile.   "Okay... Brace yourselves." Cybil said as she made her way to the front of the cage.   She took a few breaths and reached between the bars and took hold of the cloth that covered the cage and slowly lifted it. All she could see was some boxes. She slowly stood up, lifting the cloth more and more until she could see the people in front. She reached her hand out and pointed it towards the large man holding the reigns. All she needed was to think of something to scare the living shit out of this guy. She smiled as she thought of a good one.   "So then what?" A much smaller man asked.   "So then I tell them, I tell them... 'If you don't give me my coin! I'm going to..." She large man began as dirt and rock exploded infrount of the steads pulling the wagon.   A 20-foot long black and white stripped Sandworm erupted from the ground and looked at the man. It's maw opened and peeled back revealing a smaller head with a row of white razor sharp teeth. It let out an earsplitting screech and lunged at the man.   "Ahhheee!" The large man screamed.   "You're going to ahhheee?" The small man asked confused right before he fell off the wagon when the large man pulled hard on the reigns.   The wagon hitched and jumped as the horses pulling it went off the road but did not overturn, instead it began barreling through the woods at a high speed. The man looked back to see if the monster had given chase when he could see Cybil peeking out at him, her arm extended, she smiled nervously.   "What are you d-" He asked before a thick tree branch struck him in the back of the head, causing him to tumble off the wagon. The wagon bounced higher then norman as he passed under the wheels.   "What's going on?! Why are we still moving!" Nana called out.   "We are out of control! The drivers are gone! Hold on tight!" Cybil said as the horses continued running through the woods.   Cybil watched as the horses weaved between trees and through bushes, the wagon jumped with every tree root it's wooden wheels hit. Cybil prayed to whatever god there was that both horses didn't try to split up to go around a tree. She blinked as she could see a large branch rushing towards her. She dropped down and yelled.   "Get down!"   The branch slammed into the cage, splintering from the force as the iron bars ripped free of the wood that held them in place. The cage had been peeled back like a can of sardines. Belldandy had been pulled back roughly and thrown to the ground as the iron bar she was shackled to was torn free and thrown off into the woods. With the shackles digging deep into her arms, her blood began to flow freely.   "Belldandy!" Nana Yelled as she crawled over to her.   "W-What happened?" Cybil asked as she got up, a bit amazed that she managed to hold on to the Concealment cloth.   "Belldandy's hurt! But her shackles are free!" Nana yelled back.   "Are we going to die?!" Nadia yelled out.   "Probably!" The bird woman crowed.   "Not yet!" K'Tara said as she got up and crawled up whatever boxes that had been tied down in place in an attempt to make her way to the front of the wagon.   She searched for the reigns and found them dangling dangerously close to the speeding ground. She heaved and reached for them.   "K'Tara!" Cybil screamed.   K'Tara looked up as the horses cleared the forest and were quickly speeding toward a river.   "Well... Ssssssssshit." She said as the horses turned sharply.   The wagon pitched and flipped. Cybil, K'Tara, Nana, Belldandy, Nadia, and the bird woman flew gracefully right before they all hit the water. Cybil skipped once on the surface before she came to a stop and sank. She blinked, the cold water quickly bringing her to her senses. She looked up and swam towards the light as fast as she could, her head broke the surface of the fast moving river only a few seconds after having gone under.   "F-Fuck rivers..." She spat as she gasped.   "Hel-" Cybil heard to her left.   She thought it had sounded like Nadia. She looked frantically as she saw a piece of square wood floating. It took her all of a second to realize it was the top of the cage Nadia was in. The iron bars on the box were just heavy enough to almost beat the buoyancy of the wood frame, turning it into a watery box of death for the small fairy. She swam over to it, grabbed it and lifted it up over her head. Nadia began violently coughing and wheezing. With her other hand and feet, Cybil paddled to keep herself above water. It was working mostly.   "Nana! K'Tara! Belldandy!........ Bird lady!" She called out.   "Over here!" K'Tara said as she was further behind her.   She seemed to be swimming just fine. The bird woman had her arms wrapped around her neck and holding on to her for dear life.   "Where is Nana!?" She asked.   "I don't know!" K'Tara said back as the water swept them further downstream.   Cybil looked around her. Just water. She began to panic when something broke the surface of the water a little down from her. Nana's head bobbed up took a deep breath then went back under.   "Nana!" Cybil yelled as she tried to paddle towards her.   Nana came back up, this time holding an unconscious Belldandy. She seemed to be struggling with staying above the water. She kept going under, seemingly using all her strength to hold Belldandy above the cold water. Cybil finally managed to get to her. She began to paddle with her feet as hard as she can to stay floating as she used her free hand to reach under Belldandy and grabbed a fistful of Nana's hair and pulled her up. She came back up coughing and yelling in pain.   "Grab onto me... I'm going to try to make it to shore!" Cybil yelled.   Not saying anything, she wrapped her arm around Cybil's chest and held on. Now with her hand free again she desperately began to paddle towards shore.   "Ffffuuuuuucccckkkk!" She yelled at every inch she came closer to land.   Her face went under water but she did not stop paddling.

"Fffffffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuucccccccckkkkkkkkkk" She screamed internally as she felt her limbs getting heavier, still never stopping.   Nana took a gasp of air as she went under. Belldandy soon followed. Nadia clung to the top of her cage as the water engulfed the bottom, it slowly inched it's way up the metal bars. She took the biggest breath of air she could before being swallowed by the waves.   .

Suddenly the cage resurfaced. Nadia let out the breath and panted heavily as Cybil walked out of the water. Her knees were shaking and she was breathing heavily and rapidly. As she made it to the shallows she fell to her knees and then collapsed on the bed of the river. Nana let go of her and slowly and painfully got up and dragged them all the rest of the way onto land.   Cybil laid there catching her breath as she felt the blood on her veins begin to circulate precious air to them. She looked over to the hand that was holding the small cage at the equally exhausted Nadia who was looking back at her through the bars. She then turned her head and looked at Nana trying to revive Belldandy.   "Come on! Don't die after all this!" She said as she gave her a small slap.   Cybil began to sit up as she watched Nana crawl over and grab Nadia's cage and pulled it over to her.   "Nadia. You know healing magic right? Can you use it?" Nana asked.   "Uh...Yeah, but... I don't think-" Nadia started.   "Just do it!" She shouted.   "O-Okay... Get me closer." Nadia said.   Nadia's hand began to glow blue, tendrils of light flowed from her hands and spread along Belldandy. The light faded and they all watched Belldandy. She laid motionless.   "Try it again." Nana said.   "It has a cooldown, I have to wait 10 more seconds..." She said.   "CPR, Try CPR." Cybil said.   "What? What is that?" She asked.   Cybil got on her knees and crawled over to them. She kneeled over Belldandy and placed her head on her chest.   "Okay... No heartbeat." Cybil said to herself as she tried to remember how to do CPR.   K'Tara and the Birdwoman finally made their way to them and watched as Cybil tilted Belldandy's head back and placed her hands on her chest, she began to push down and count.   "What are you doing!? You're going to kill her!" Nana said.   "Shut up... 4, 5, 6, 7, 8- " she continued counting till she reached 30.   She bent down and listened again. She then pinched Belldandy's nose and placed her lips on hers. She breathed out, pulled her head back, took another breath and repeat. She then began to press on her chest again.   "W-What is this?" Nana asked.   Cybil did not respond, after 30 more presses she bent down to listen again. She took another breath and forced it down into Belldandy's lungs. Cybil pulled away just as Belldandy coughed up both a mixture of water, spit and vomit. Cybil rolled her onto her side and rubbed her arms to warm her up.   "You... Revived her? H-How? What... Was that some sort of resurrection magic?" Nana asked.   "No... It's CPR... Anyone can do it... " She said as she motioned to her to start warming her up.   "...Her HP... It was at 0... you brought it back to 1..." Nadia said in disbelief as she stared at Belldandy with glowing gold eyes.   "CPR? Can... Can you teach me?" Nana asked.   "Sure... Hold on!" Cybil said as she looked in the river and saw a familiar cloth floating by.   She got up and ran back into the river. They all watched as she swam out to it, grabbed it, and began to swim back.   "Ssshe did say that wasss not magic right?" K'Tara asked.   "Yeah..." The Birdwoman said as they watched her come out of the water and walked back towards them.   "Look what I got! A concealment cloth!" She said smiling.   "....." They all looked at her for a few seconds before Nana spoke up.   "We should get away from the river bank." She said.   "Yeah, we were washed downstream pretty far but they will still be looking for us." The bird woman said a matter of factly.   Cybil laid the cloth out and they all rolled Belldandy onto it. They laid her on her stomach and placed Nadia's cage on her lower back.   "Nadia, keep healing her till she is at as full of health as she can be." Nana said as she grabbed one corner of the cloth.   Cybil grabbed the other and nodded as K'Tara grabbed the corner behind her. They looked at the bird woman and waited. She sighed and then grabbed the remaining corner and they all lifted her. They walked into the forest away from the river and kept walking. An hour passed in near silence as they didn't want to notify anyone or anything that could be in hearing range.   "Status..." Cybil said under her breath.   Her Dominion sheet came up in front of her. She smiled seeing that her swimming skill had gained enough experience to almost reach level 2. She also smiled seeing that she apparently learned a new Life Skill, 'First Aid'.   "Huh? Hey guys... Why is it when I learn new magic, I get a notification but I don't when I gain a skill. I received no word about getting my Running, Swimming, Woodcutting, and Weapon Throwing skills." Cybil asked.   "You can change that in your settings." Nana said.   "Set-what-now?" Cybil asked.   "Just say Settings..." Nana told her.   "... Settings." Cybil said as a new screen popped up.

"... God damn you, Dominion..." Cybil said under her breath and sighed.   She reached up and began to look through her settings and made some adjustments.   "Hey, What does it mean with the HP, MP, and EP options? Why are they in a separate category?" She asked.   "If you turn them on, You can see them without looking at your Dominion Sheet." Nana said.   "W-Why is that not on by default?" Cybil asked.   "I don't know... Maybe not to confuse people when they were babies?" Nana hypothesized.   "Okay... Whatever..." Cybil said as she made her final adjustments.

"Okay, Let's see how that works out." Cybil said and dismissed her screen.   "Oh... In case you didn't know, You can control all the Dominion screens with your mind. You don't even have to really call it up with your voice." Nana told her.   "Really? That would have been a great thing for the tutorial to tell me..." She said a bit annoyed.   Cybil decided to give it a try and called her Dominion Sheet up with thought alone.

Cybil blinked. It already had a name, so why was it asking her. So no one at all knows CPR in Malgamare? Just how primitive is the medical field in this world? She sighed and decided.
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Is this the name you would like to call this technique? Y / N

"Uhhhhhh... What?" Cybil asked.   "What what?" Nana asked.   "I got to name the CPR technique I performed, and it sent the information to something called the Grand Curative Institute." Cybil said.   "... Wow, I don't know what that is..." Nana said.   "Never heard of iiit." K'Tara added.   "Huh... Oh well." Cybil said as dismissed her Dominion Sheet as she saw no more notifications.   "We have been walking for awhile... Let's rest and find something to eat." Nana said.   Everyone agreed without saying anything and gently placed Belldandy down. As everyone stretched Cybil knelt down and looked over to Nadia.   "How is she doing?" She asked.   "Still sleeping, but her HP is steady at 54." She said as she stared at Belldandy with light gold glowing eyes.   "Hmm... Keep watching her okay?" She asked.   "Sure!" Nadia said as Cybil got back up.   "Okay... What do we do for food?" She asked.   "Let's gather any edible looking plants like mushrooms and berries and such." Nana said.   "K'Tara, can you gather some wood." Nana asked.   "Sssure." She said as she began looking around.   "And you... You can help either K'Tara or us, your choice." Nana said to the bird woman as she motioned for Cybil to follow her.   She just groaned and followed K'Tara. Cybil walked with Nana further into the woods. She watched as Nana looked at the base of every tree and bush. Cybil walked over to another tree and did the same. She pushed around some leaves and sighed when she found nothing. She moved to the next tree and smiled when she a small white mushroom. She bent down and looked it over.   "Hey, Is this good?" She asked turning back to Nana, her shirt was already halfway full with the edible fungus.   "Just grab whatever you can, we will sort it out at the fire." She told her.   "You're the boss..." She said as she picked it and used her tunic as a bowl to hold it much like what Nana was doing.   She felt a bit self-conscious as she had to left up her Tunic to do this and she was currently not wearing anything underneath. But then she realized with everything that has happened, it was a bit of a dumb thing to worry about. After filling her shirt with any mushroom she can find, she stopped when she came to a bush. Small berries grew on them. They grew many on a stem much like grapes but were each about the size of a pea. The color was eye-catching with a bright orangish-red. Cybil shrugged and began picking as many as she could.   "Alright, I don't think I can hold much more." Cybil said to Nana.   "Same here, there is a surprising amount of wild mushrooms around." She said back to her.   "You want to head back now?" Cybil asked.   "Not yet, here help me for a second." She said walking over to Cybil.   "What do you..." Cybil started to ask as Nana dumped all her mushrooms into Cybil's tunic, almost spilling a few.   Nana then removed her shirt completely and began tieing the neckline and both sleeves shut. Cybil watched as she made a makeshift bag. Unlike Cybil, Nana actually was wearing something underneath her rag of a shirt. She wore what looked like a loin cloth and had her breasts wrapped with a bandage-like cloth. Cybil was surprised to see her sporting a 6-pack on her stomach. Despite her being in great shape, what she noticed more was the numerous scars all over her body. She had noticed a few on her arms and legs but her chest, stomach, and back were littered with them.   "Alright! Now we can carry 4 times as much... What is it?" Nana asked.   "Oh! Nothing..." She said as she dumped what they had found so far into the shirt-turned-bag.   "Let's look over here." She said as she began to walk around some bushes.   "Sooooooo...." Cybil trailed.   "How did you meet Belldandy?" She asked.   "... In the cage, about a day and a half ago. Why?" She asked.   "Oh!? I thought... It seemed like you've known her for longer, you were taking care of her and all." Cybil said.   "Ah! No, haha, She just seemed like she clearly needed help. I couldn't really leave her alone like that..." She said.   "Hmm. So... How long have you been... uhh... a slave?" Cybil asked, not quite sure if this was something that was even okay to ask.   "About a month... I was fighting against invading Santeorian troops up north. Was stationed in a small fort along the border of Santeoria and my home country of Astea. We were horribly outnumbered, at least 1 to 1000." She said.   "You're a soldier?" Cybil asked.   "Was... We laid down our arms when it was clear that victory was impossible. We were captured and we're going to be sent either to prison or maybe to be re-educated and sent to fight for Santeoria. Anyway, some of the guards that were supposed to escort us to where ever it was they were taking us decided instead to fatten their own pockets and sell some of us to Slavers. A few days ago I was placed in that cage and on my way to be sold at auction in Le' Portano City. But luckily I met you and I'm now two days away from calling myself a free woman again." She said smiling back.   "Two days?" Cybil asked.   "It's when the 'Slavery' enchantment wears off completely." She said.   "Ah... Well, glad to have met you too!" Cybil said.   "So... Are you really a Champion? I know Nadia says it's true but... It's still hard to believe." Nana asked.   "Yeah, same here... What the hell is a Champion anyway?" Cybil asked.   "You're one and you don't even what it is? The gods must be wary, haha." Nana said with a chuckle.   "The Gods? Is that just a saying or... Are we talking actual Gods here?" Cybil asked.   "... The Gods as in 'The Gods'..." She said with extra emphasis on the second 'The Gods'.   When she could see Cybil's helpless face she sighed and began to explain.   "Where to begin?... In the beginning, they say that there was a single God. They called him the High Essence, or that's what legends call him now. His true name may have been lost to the ages, not even The Gods know it. He created everything. Malgamare, The Outer Realms, The Lower Grounds, The Quintessence Lands... They even say he created other worlds separate from Malgamare." Nana said.   "Other Worlds? Like the world I come from? Earth?" Cybil asked.   "I don't know... Maybe, some forms of the legends do say that he created the Land of Champions." Nana said.   Cybil reached down and plucked a mushroom and tossed it into the bag. She watched as Nana began to dig up a root of another plant.   "Okay... So, what happened to the High Essence?" Cybil asked.   "Know one knows... They just say that he created Dominion and then left all creation behind." She said.   "Left? To where?" Cybil asked.   "I don't know... Sometime after that, The Gods that we know now came and began to rule Malgamare." Nana told her.   "So who are The Gods then?" Cybil asked.   "I don't know where they come from, but there are many Gods. Balphor, Senticalphia, Mammon, Lilith... about a thousand or so more..." She said.   "There are thousands of them?!" Cybil asked somewhat shocked.   "Yeah, It's them that choose people from the Land of Champions and bring them to Malgamare." She said as she tossed a few roots in the bag.   "Why? What possible reason do they have to do that?" Cibil asked, stopping from picking mushrooms.   "Uhh... I don't know... Sorry, all I know are what the legends say... I guess only The Gods know that answer." She said.   "Haaa... Not knowing is frustrating. Wait, back in the cage Bird Lady said that there have been no Champions for the last 500 years. Why?" Cybil asked.   "They say that is because of the Champion of Betrayal, Tizoc." Nana said.   "Champion of Betrayal? What did he do?" Cybil asked.   "Grew too powerful, too quickly and apparently scarred one of The Gods." Nana said.   "... Why would he do that?" Cybil asked.   "They say he gained far more power than a being of flesh should ever have and went mad! Imagine it, attacking the same Gods that blessed him with such strength" She told her shaking her head.   "Hmmm... So that happened and none of the Gods decided to bring anymore Champions to Malgamare untill now?" Cybil both asked and contemplated.   "I guess so... If you are here there may be more being brought here too." Nana said.   "... Did... Are there any legends of Champions making it back to the Land of Champions?" Cybil asked.   "... No... Not that I know of... Sorry." She said as she placed one more root in the bag and then got up.   "This should be good! Let's get back to the others." Nana said.   "Sure..." Cybil said as she got up and followed her.   Now that the initial confusion and overwhelming franticness of the last day had worn off, an undeniable certainty began to sink deep down into Cybil. She was stranded in a strange land, and she was most likely going to be here until the day she died.
